While often referred to as a bursary in terms of career development and support, it’s essentially a comprehensive programme aimed at equipping you with the skills and experience to become a vital part of CapeNature’s conservation efforts. You’ll be contributing directly to biodiversity conservation through hands-on work in breathtaking locations like the Jonkershoek Nature Reserve Complex, focusing on everything from compliance monitoring to eco-tourism and environmental education. Who Can Apply?
Ready to jump into action? CapeNature is looking for passionate individuals who meet the following requirements:
- You must have completed Grade 12.
- You need at least 2 years of relevant experience.
- A valid driver’s license with a minimum of three years’ driving experience is essential.
- You should have a working knowledge of enforcement operations, especially the National Environmental Management Protected Areas Act.
- Being computer literate (MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, GIS) will be a big plus!
- Experience in ecological monitoring, law enforcement, firefighting, and incident response is required.
- Bilingualism in two of the three official languages of the Western Cape will definitely help.
- You must have no criminal record.
Got extra skills? Even better! CapeNature highly recommends candidates who also have:
- A National Diploma in Nature Conservation and/or Marine Science.
- A valid Peace Officer’s certificate, EMI Grade 5 certification, or other enforcement experience.
- An appropriate firefighting certificate.
- 4×4 driving skills and experience.
- ICS 100 certification.
- Experience using GIS software.
- The ability to swim and be water-safe.
Plus, you need to be willing to work weekend shifts and irregular hours, be physically capable of performing Field Ranger duties (including swimming!), have strong problem-solving skills, and be able to work both independently and as part of a team.
