Scholarship Description:
The University Council awards doctoral scholarships based on the recommendation of the Senate. These scholarships are intended for candidates who are embarking on a supervised doctoral program at the University. Typically, these scholarships are reserved for students who are pursuing their initial doctoral qualification. Each candidate can receive only one University of Otago doctoral scholarship.
Similarly, Masters’ scholarships are granted by the University Council, also based on the Senate’s recommendation. These scholarships are specifically intended for candidates who are in the first year of their thesis research for a Master’s degree. The Master’s degree obtained through this research serves as an entry point for the PhD program at the University. These scholarships are available exclusively to students who are pursuing their first research-based Master’s qualification.
In essence, both the doctoral and Masters’ scholarships are awarded through the oversight of the University Council and the recommendation of the Senate. Eligibility Criteria:
Scholarships for Doctoral and Masters’ programs will be granted based on the following criteria:
a) Academic Performance: The selection process will consider the applicant’s academic achievements. For applicants with a doctoral scholarship background, their Master’s degree grades and thesis will be evaluated. If the thesis took longer than 2 full-time years, an explanation might be requested. For those without a Master’s degree including a thesis, the grades of relevant advanced level papers from their most applicable degree will be considered. If previous qualifications are from other universities, a GPA score will be calculated using the most relevant papers and grades, excluding Certificate of Proficiency and Pass/Fail papers.
b) Research Potential or Record: The applicant’s potential or history in research will also be taken into account.
c) Recommendation from Head of Department: The advice, recommendation, and ranking provided by the relevant Head of Department will contribute to the selection process.
Eligibility for these scholarships is as follows:
Generally, only Domestic Fee Paying Students are eligible for Doctoral and Masters’ scholarships. International candidates pursuing professional doctorates can apply, but if awarded a scholarship, the tuition fee waiver will be limited to the domestic rate.
For doctoral scholarship applicants, confirmation of the scholarship depends on approval of their admission application to the relevant doctoral program and completion of the enrollment process.
For Master’s scholarship applicants, confirmation of the scholarship depends on approval of their application to enroll as a Master’s candidate and successful completion of the enrollment process.
