Bursary Description
The Moscow State Institute of International Relations (MGIMO) is offering scholarships for Bachelor’s and Preparatory Faculty’s programmes for South African citizens for the 2024-25 academic year.
Bachelor’s education programme are instructed in English or Russian (according to the choice of a student) while the Preparatory Faculty entails a 1-year course of the Russian language with the further transfer to a Bachelor’s or Master’s programme in Russian.
The academic year starts on the 1st September.

Who can apply?
- South African citizens in good health (medical test will be required for successful applicants);
- Have a strong academic record.
For the Preparatory Faculty
- Candidates will be expected to attend courses in the Russian language at MGIMO for six academic hours per week.
For Master’s studies:
- Have a Bachelor’s degree with a strong academic record.

What the scholarship offers
The scholarship covers tuition, monthly allowance (50 $) and provides discounts for accommodation.
Application process
Candidates interested in applying to the Education Programmes at MGIMO must register and complete the application form via Application portal. Before submitting the application to the university, candidates are requested to submit copies of their applications for approval by the South African Department of Higher Education and Training at
The scholarships are granted based on selection results. The number of applicants allowed to apply/participate is not limited. Following submitting of the relevant documents, potential candidates will be invited to an online interview with representatives of the Department of Higher Education and Training and the Embassy of the Russian Embassy in South Africa.
