Degree Level:

The Confucius Institute Scholarship offers various categories and durations for the study of Chinese language and culture, as well as scholarships for prospective Chinese language teachers. These options are as follows:

For Chinese Language and Culture Studies:

  1. Scholarships for an Academic Year: A total of 11 months, beginning in September (lasting until July of the following year) or starting in March (lasting until January of the following year).
  2. Scholarships for an Academic Semester: The scholarship covers 5 months, either the semester from September to January (winter) or from March to July (summer).
  3. Scholarships for Four Weeks: One-month courses are available during the winter holidays in China (December to January) or the summer holidays (July to August).

For Future Chinese Language Teachers:

  1. Scholarship for Master in Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language (MTCSOL): This program spans 2 academic years.
  2. Scholarship for One Academic Year of Chinese Language and Culture + 2 Years of MTCSOL: In total, this covers 3 academic courses.
  3. Scholarship for Bachelor in Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language (BTCSOL): This program extends over 4 academic courses.

All three CIS scholarships designed for training Chinese language teachers generally commence in September or March. The application for these scholarships should be completed online, with the system providing the option to prioritize two universities from a selection of 150 institutions offering this scholarship across the country.

Scholarship Benefits:

The Confucius Institute scholarship encompasses several benefits for recipients, covering tuition fees, lodging expenses (typically in a shared university residence room), basic medical insurance, and a monthly allowance for personal expenditures. These allowances are distributed as follows:

  • For BTCSOL students or those pursuing Chinese language and culture courses, the monthly allowance is 2,500 Yuan (approximately 350 USD).
  • MTCSOL students receive a monthly allowance of 3,000 Yuan (equivalent to about 420 USD).

Furthermore, the Confucius Institute has introduced an option for scholarship recipients to choose to live off-campus, foregoing university residence accommodation. In such cases, an additional 700 Yuan per month is provided to assist with rental expenses, in addition to the standard monthly allowance.

For scholarships extending beyond one year, the Confucius Institute conducts an annual review of recipients’ academic performance. Exceptional results are required for scholarship renewal for the subsequent year. If a student’s academic performance falls below the required standard, the Confucius Institute may choose not to renew the scholarship or, in some instances, offer partial funding that covers all expenses except the monthly personal allowance.

For study periods exceeding six months, applicants are required to demonstrate their physical and mental well-being to process a residence permit in China. This involves submitting an official Chinese medical form or Foreigner Physical Examination Form upon arrival at the destination university (not during the initial application phase).

Age Criteria:

  • Applicants should fall within the age range of 16 to 35. However, this age limit is extended up to 45 for individuals who can provide evidence of working as Chinese teachers at the time of applying for the scholarship. Undergraduate scholarship applicants should not exceed 20 years of age.

Chinese Language Proficiency:

  • Proficiency in the Chinese language, as assessed by HSK (written and oral) and in some cases, BCT and oral BCT, is essential. The specific language requirements depend on the type of scholarship. For instance, for scholarships to study academic courses in Chinese language and culture, a minimum of 180 points in written HSK3 and a minimum of 60 points in oral HSK are required. Educational Qualifications:

  • The MTCSOL scholarship requires applicants to submit their undergraduate diploma and academic records. For BTCSOL scholarship or Chinese language courses, proof of high school completion is necessary. If these documents are not in English or Chinese, a certified translation in either of these languages must be provided.

Recommendation Letters:

  • Applicants for scholarships to study Chinese courses or BTCSOL need one letter of recommendation, signed by the Confucius Institute’s responsible person through which you apply. MTCSOL scholarship applicants require two recommendation letters.

Employment as Chinese Language Professors:

  • Preference is given to MTCSOL scholarship applicants who can demonstrate employment as Chinese language professors after completing their master’s degree studies in China.

Previous Study in China:

  • Applicants for one-semester or four-week scholarships should not have studied in China before.

Visa Processing Documents:

  • The essential documents required for visa processing will be sent to you by postal mail within 15 days after the scholarship results are published. During this phase of the procedure, patience is recommended, as it may take over a month to receive the necessary documents.
