Stellenbosch University Lisa Maskell Scholarship South Africa 2025

 

ABOUT THE SCHOLARSHIP PROVIDER – STELLENBOSCH UNIVERSITY & GERDA HENKEL FOUNDATION

The Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences is one of ten faculties at Stellenbosch University, which offers a range of undergraduate and postgraduate qualifications in Arts (Drama; Music and Visual Arts), Languages (​African Languages; Afrikaans and Dutch; Ancient Studies; English​; General Linguistics and Modern Foreign Languages), and Social Sciences (​Geography and Environmental Studies​; History​; Information Science; Journalism; Philosophy; Political Science; Psychology; Social Work; and Sociology and Social ​Anthropology).

The Gerda Henkel Foundation was established in by Lisa Maskell in memory of her mother Gerda Henkel. The Foundation was formed as a private, non-profit grant making organization in 1976, with the goal of promoting the study of science at universities and research institutes, by supporting projects within the humanities field. Since 2014, the Foundation has been providing scholars from Africa and Southeast Asia, with support to continue studies within humanities.
 

ABOUT THE GERDA HENKEL STIFTUNG FOUNDATION – LISA MASKELL SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAMME

The Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences at Stellenbosch University, partnered with the Gerda Henkel Foundation, is inviting students to apply for the Lisa Maskell / PANGeA Scholarship, for the 2025​​ academic year.

The scholarship will be awarded for full-time PhD studies at Stellenbosch University, for research projects in these Historical Humanities fields:

  • Archaeology
  • Art History
  • Historical Islamic Studies
  • History
  • History of Law
  • History of Science
  • Prehistory and Early History

The following research topics may also be considered: areas such as cultural studies, political science, and social sciences that explore current issues in a larger historical context, or consciously focus on topics of relevance to the present or the future, such as forced migration, or democracy.

(Scholarships will not be awarded for Honours studies or for coursework Masters programmes where the thesis component is less than 180 credits.)

MORE ABOUT THE LISA MASKELL SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAMME – COVERAGE VALUE

The scholarship will be awarded to the maximum value of R450 000, over 3 years of study, with additional research support costs to the value of R62 000.

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS FOR THE LISA MASKELL SCHOLARSHIP

Applicants must satisfy the following minimum entry criteria before applying (please note that failure to satisfy all the requirements will lead to your application not being considered):

  • You must be from an African country
  • You must not be older than 35 years old
  • You must have completed a full MA research thesis
  • You must intend on studying full-time towards a PhD, in one of the Historical Humanities research projects listed above
  • You must be able to start your studies in February 2025
  • You must apply to study at Stellenbosch University, within the Graduate School of the Arts and Social Science Faculty, in 2025
  • You must make prior contact with the Department in the Faculty of Arts and Socials Sciences in which you intend to pursue your studies, before applying for the scholarship (you must contact the department and obtain a letter of recommendation, stating that there is supervisory capacity for your intended project)
  • You must have an excellent academic record
  • You must have achieved a minimum result of 70% in your final year of the most recent degree you have completed
  • Preference will be given to students from PANGeA partner institutions

Submit clear copies of the following supporting documentation along with your completed application form (the submission of these documents is compulsory – if any items are missing, your application may be disqualified):

  • ID document, if an South African citizen (certified copy)
  • Passport, if an international student (certified copy)
  • Full academic transcript (certified copy)
  • MA degree certificate or foreign equivalent (certified copy) (or official proof from your institution that the degree will be delivered before March 2025, if the certificate is not available)
  • Motivational letter to support your application (maximum 600 words) (read our article about writing a motivational letter)
  • Pre-proposal or research idea describing your proposed research question and conceptualization (more details can be found on the application form) (maximum 500 words)
  • Sample of your writing: MA thesis for PhD applicants
  • Any published academic articles related to your application
  • Applicants from institutions within the PANGeA network: nomination letter from institution
  • Attach any of the following if applicable: an existing record of publications/ awards or grants received/ relevant professional or artistic experience/ the ability to use any language(s) in addition to English for academic purposes
