ABOUT THE CANON COLLINS RMTF SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAMME – FIELDS COVERED
Canon Collins Trust, partnered with the Ros Moger and Terry Furlong (RMTF) group, are inviting students to apply for scholarship funding, for the 2025 academic year.
Scholarships will be awarded to students from Angola, Botswana, Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, Eswatini and Zambia, for Postgraduate studies (Masters or PhD) in South Africa, within the following fields:
- Justice (including Climate Justice, Law, Economics and Politics)
- Education policy and practice
- Humanities (including Literature, History, Anthropology and the Arts)
The scholarship aims to support exceptional individuals who are committed to social justice in southern Africa and for whom a postgraduate qualification is an essential tool in working to create an open and just society.

MORE ABOUT THE CANON COLLINS RMTF SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAMME – COVERAGE VALUE & SELECTION
The Scholarship will be awarded to the value of between R20 000 and R100 000, depending on the students circumstances. Masters students will receive funding for up to 2 years and PhD students will receive funding for up to 3 years. Funding will be renewed based on satisfactory academic performance.
Scholarship recipients will be required to take part in annual conferences and various smaller events throughout the year.
Applicants will be notified of the outcome of their application – this correspondence will be sent via email. Shortlisted candidates will be invited to attend an interview between October and November 2024, and thereafter, final successful applicants will be informed in December 2024. ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS FOR THE CANON COLLINS RMTF SCHOLARSHIP
Applicants must satisfy the following minimum entry criteria before applying (please note that failure to satisfy all the requirements will lead to your application not being considered):
- You must be a national of, or have refugee status in, one of the following countries: Angola, Botswana, Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, Swaziland, Zambia
- You must be normally resident in one of the above countries
- You must be in possession of a good first degree (minimum second class, upper division or equivalent) or about to graduate in the year of application
- You must be studying or applying to study within one the areas listed above, at postgraduate level (Masters or PhD)
- You must be studying or intend on studying on a full-time or part-time basis (applications will also be considered for students who wish to study by distance learning)
- You must be studying or applying to study at a university in South Africa

Submit clear copies of the following supporting documentation along with your online application (the submission of these documents is compulsory – if any items are missing, your application be disregarded):
- ID document, Birth Certificate, Passport or Driver’s License (certified copy)
- Proof of refugee status, if applicable
- Degree certificates, if available (certified copy)
- Academic transcripts (certified copy)
- Curriculum Vitae
- 2 latest payslips, if employed
- PhD proposal, if applicable
Shortlisted candidates will also be required to submit 2 letters of reference, relating to your suitability for the scholarship (1 from your current or most recent academic supervisor AND 1 from your employer if employed or 1 from voluntary work if never been employed, or 2 academic references).
