Bursary Description

Part of a nationwide programme, the initiative aims to support athletes in Cumbria and across the UK.

The support package includes free gym membership, bursaries, physiotherapy, lifestyle mentoring, and advice on mental health and wellbeing.

In total, £1.4 million in bursaries and gym memberships will be distributed to communities nationwide.

Last year, 86 athletes from Cumbria, including the current British 16-years 200 Backstroke Champion, Amber Rigg, received assistance through this programme.

Amber, who has been the recipient of the GSF Talent Award for two consecutive years, credits the award for her progress.

She said: “The award has allowed me to access extra swimming training as well as attend gym sessions, which has supported my strength and conditioning training.

“As my level of swimming increases, training is essential as I continue in my quest to hopefully swim for a senior British team one day.”

According to a survey by OnePoll on behalf of GSF, there was strong public support for funding and support of the next generation of athletes.

The survey revealed that 74 per cent of people in the North West believe competitive sports benefit young people’s physical health.

Other benefits identified include discipline/focus (68 per cent) and social/teamwork skills (66 per cent).

However, more than half of the respondents (54 per cent) cited a lack of finance as a significant barrier to young people participating in competitive sports.

Tom Rice, GLL partnership manager for Cumberland, said: “This programme provides us with the perfect platform to nurture a new wave of local sporting heroes.

“We are committed to continuing to support athletes to achieve their goals and aspirations, widening and deepening the opportunities for local communities through sport.

“It’s always an honour to see the positive impact these awards have on local individuals and to promote the far-reaching benefits that sport offers.”

The deadline for applications for the 2025 awards is February 20.
