Bursary Description

The Government of Mexico through the Mexican Agency for International Development Cooperation (AMEXCID) is inviting applications from foreign students who are interested in studying for a master’s degree or doctorate, conducting graduate or postdoctoral research, or taking part in an undergraduate or graduate -level academic mobility programme, to participate in the 2024 Mexican Government Scholarship Programme for International Students.

The Mexican government is providing scholarships to international students as part of its role as an actor with global responsibility and commitment to cooperation programmes that help to create highly-skilled human resources.

Degree level

Undergraduate mobility programmes (24 months maximum)

Master’s level mobility programmes (12 months maximum)

Master’s programme (24 months maximum)

Doctoral programme (36 months maximum)

Postgraduate research stays (Master’s, Doctoral, and Postdoctoral levels) (12 months maximum)

Who can apply?

The following criteria applies across all level of study:

  • Academic excellence with a minimum of 85% average mark achieved 

For undergraduate and graduate level mobilities:

  • Applicants must include an acceptance letter from the receiving Mexican University not exceeding 60 calendar days from the date of issuance, or;
  • Letter of introduction from the Mexican University not exceeding 60 calendar days from the date of issuance, current and regular status as a student, and the start and end dates of the studies (ONLY FOR CANDIDATES WHO RESIDE IN MEXICO);
  • Applicants must include a letter from the applicant’s institution agreeing to give academic credit for the classes or courses of study that will be taken in Mexico;
  • If the mobility is carried out in a language other than Spanish and different from their mother tongue, a copy of the communication issued by the receiving Institution committing to provide tutoring in another language, specifying the language and the name of the tutor;
  • If the candidate is already pursuing a degree in Mexico, a copy of the academic transcript issued by the Mexican IES in which they are enrolled, signed by a responsible authority;
  • For graduate level mobilities, applicants must submit a copy of the previous degree certificate.

Master’s Degree, Doctorate:

  • Applicants must include an acceptance letter from the receiving Mexican University not exceeding 60 calendar days from the date of issuance, or;
  • Letter of introduction from the Mexican University not exceeding 60 calendar days from the date of issuance, current and regular status as a student, and the start and end dates of the studies (ONLY FOR CANDIDATES RESIDING IN MEXICO);
  • A copy of your most recent degree;
  • An official copy of the last study certificate issued by the home institution. A doctoral candidate does not have to demonstrate a minimum grade point average;
  • If the candidate is already pursuing a degree in Mexico, a copy of the academic record issued by the Mexican HEI in which the applicant is enrolled, signed by a responsible authority;
  • If the studies are in a language other than Spanish and different from their native language, a copy of the communication issued by the receiving Institution must be presented, committing to provide tutoring in another language, specifying this language and the name of the tutor.

 Research stays at graduate level:

  • A copy of your most recent degree (Master’s or doctorate as applicable);
  • An official copy of the last study certificate issued by the home institution. A doctoral candidate does not have to demonstrate a minimum grade point average;
  • In the acceptance letter, it must indicate that tutoring will be provided to assist in the development of the research. It should also state who will advise the applicant and what the research will be;
  • Applicants must provide a copy of the communication issued by the receiving institution, committing to provide tutoring in another language, stating this language and the name of the tutor, if the research stay will take place in a language other than Spanish or their native language.

What the scholarship covers

The scholarship includes registration and tuition fees at the participating Mexican higher education institutions. In addition, scholarship recipients will receive:

  • For Master’s scholarships, Mobility at the Bachelor’s and Master’s levels, and Master’s level research: a monthly stipend of 4 (four) times the monthly value of the Federal Economic Measurement Unit (UMA), currently equivalent to $13,202.12 (Thirteen thousand two hundred two pesos 12/100 M.N.) per month.
  • For Doctoral scholarships and research stays at the doctoral and postdoctoral levels: a monthly stipend of 5 (five) times the monthly value of the UMA, currently equivalent to $16,502.65 (Sixteen thousand five hundred two 65/100 M.N.).
  • Enrollment and tuition fees;
  • Health insurance from the Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS) starting from the seventh month of the scholarship;
  • Cost of issuing the Mexican resident visa;
  • International airfare upon completion of the academic programme;
  • National transportation. Should the scholarship recipient be pursuing studies outside the Metropolitan Area of Mexico City, transportation from Mexico City to the host institution and back will be provided at the start and the end of their academic activities

Please note: 

Successful candidates are required to make provision for all other expenses not covered under this scholarship. The applicant will be responsible for covering their medical expenses in case they require it, so it is recommended to acquire an international medical insurance that covers the period where they will not have access to medical services (first six months).
