Hey, future research rockstar! 🚀 Are you ready to dive deep into groundbreaking environmental science and make a real impact? Mangosuthu University of Technology (MUT) is offering an incredible Postdoctoral Research Fellowship for 2025, and it could be your chance to lead the charge in cleaning up our industrial wastewater. If you’ve got a PhD and a passion for innovative solutions, keep reading – this opportunity is seriously cool!

This isn’t just any research gig; it’s a vital project focused on tackling the tough problem of heavy metals and emerging contaminants in industrial wastewater. You’ll be using cutting-edge electro precipitation (EP) technology to develop new ways to treat water, protect our environment, and potentially even help create a more circular economy. Imagine your research directly contributing to cleaner rivers and safer communities right here in South Africa!

Who Can Apply?

So, who exactly is MUT looking for?

First things first, you need to have completed your **PhD in Chemical Engineering** or a closely related applied science discipline within the last five years. They’re especially keen on candidates with expertise in **wastewater treatment technologies**, industrial wastewater remediation, and/or waste valorisation for a circular economy. If you’re a South African citizen or permanent resident, that’s a plus, but international fellows are also welcome – just make sure you have the correct Section 11(1)(b) Visitor’s Visa for academic activities!

Beyond your qualifications, MUT wants to see a strong track record. This means you should have a solid publication history (they expect at least two manuscripts per year!) in peer-reviewed DHET-accredited journals. They’re looking for someone who hasn’t held full-time permanent academic or professional employment, ensuring this is a dedicated research opportunity.

To really stand out, experience in mentoring postgraduate students, a genuine passion for research, and knowledge of software for experimental design are big advantages. If you’re also familiar with analytical instruments like GC-MS or HPLC, even better! Strong literature review and publication writing skills, computer literacy, data interpretation, excellent communication (oral and written), the ability to work independently or in teams, and strong organisational and project management skills are key competencies for this role.

What Does It Cover?

Let’s talk about the perks! This Postdoctoral Research Fellowship comes with a generous value of **R300,000 per annum**, and here’s the best part – it’s tax-exempt! That’s a fantastic boost for your research career. The fellowship is initially for one year, but if you’re doing great work and funding allows, it can be renewed for another year. This means up to two years of fully funded, impactful research!

How to Apply?

Ready to make your move? Applying for this awesome fellowship is straightforward.

You need to send your application by **29 August 2025** to Ms S.N Masondo via email at: hr.engineering@mut.ac.za

Here’s a checklist of everything you’ll need to include:

  1. A compelling motivation letter explaining why you’re the perfect fit, highlighting how you meet all the eligibility criteria and the fellowship’s focus.
  2. A certified copy of your South African ID document (or passport if you’re an international applicant).
  3. Your comprehensive Curriculum Vitae (CV), showcasing all your publications, conference papers, and other scholarly outputs.
  4. Certified copies of your doctoral degree certificate.
  5. The names and contact details of three contactable referees who can speak to your academic and research capabilities.
  6. Official academic transcripts from your previous studies.
  7. If your qualifications were obtained outside South Africa, you’ll need to provide a SAQA evaluation certificate.

Make sure you gather all these documents and submit them before the deadline. Don’t leave it until the last minute!
