Hey future leaders! Are you a recent graduate in Africa looking for an incredible opportunity to kickstart your career and make a real impact? Well, you’re in luck! The Mastercard Foundation is rolling out its awesome Graduate Internship Program for 2026, and it’s the perfect chance to gain professional experience, mentorship, and skills that will set you up for success. Even though it’s called an “Internship Program,” this is a fantastic opportunity for young Africans to get funded experience, much like a bursary helps with education costs! Let’s dive into what this program is all about!
This is an 11-month paid internship designed for ambitious young professionals with little to no work experience. It’s your chance to work directly with the Mastercard Foundation’s teams, supporting their vital programs and initiatives across Africa. Think of it as a launchpad for your career, helping you transition from student life into the professional world with top-notch support and development. It’s not just a job; it’s a comprehensive program aimed at equipping you with the skills and exposure you need to land future employment or even start your own venture!
Who Can Apply?
Okay, so who gets to jump on this amazing opportunity?
This program is specifically looking for young, driven Africans who are recent graduates (0-4 years of experience) and hold a Bachelor’s degree in any field from a recognised institution.
Here are the key things you need to know:
- You must be eligible to work in one of these countries where the Mastercard Foundation operates: Ethiopia, Ghana, Kenya, Nigeria, Rwanda, Senegal, or Uganda. (Important note for our South African readers: while this is a fantastic African opportunity, the internship roles are specifically based in these listed countries. If you’re a South African eligible to work in one of these countries, or simply exploring options, then keep reading!)
- You should be actively involved in community projects or extracurricular activities, showing your passion for making a difference.
- This is a full-time commitment, so you can’t be engaged in any other work during the internship.
- If you’re a Mastercard Foundation Scholar Alumni, you shouldn’t be currently studying or participating in another Foundation program.
Beyond these, they’re looking for individuals with strong academic performance, a keen interest in youth development and social impact in Africa, and a knack for applying what you’ve learned in practice. You’ll also need excellent communication, problem-solving, and organisational skills, plus a passion for innovation and making a difference!
What Does It Cover?
While this isn’t a traditional academic bursary, it does cover something super valuable: your entry into the professional world!
The Mastercard Foundation Graduate Internship Program provides you with:
- Real-world Experience: You’ll be assigned to an 11-month non-renewable program, working on actual projects and initiatives across various teams at the Foundation. This isn’t just fetching coffee; you’ll be contributing meaningfully!
- Professional Development: You’ll get access to the Foundation’s comprehensive career development program and e-learning platforms. Think of all the skills you’ll gain!
- Mentorship & Support: The program is designed to give you professional exposure, mentorship, and the skills you need to successfully transition into future employment or entrepreneurship opportunities.
- Paid Opportunity: While the specific stipend isn’t detailed, internships of this calibre are typically paid, providing financial support as you gain invaluable experience.
You’ll get to work within exciting functions like Finance, Programs, People & Culture, Legal & Compliance, Public Affairs, Technology, and more, starting from 15 January 2026!
