The University of the Free State (UFS) is looking for a dedicated Technical Assistant to join the School of Biomedical Sciences within the Faculty of Health Sciences. This is a permanent, full-time position based at our Bloemfontein Campus.

About the Role

As a Technical Assistant, you will play a crucial role in maintaining the well-being of animals and the cleanliness of the Animal Research Centre (ARC). This position is ideal for someone who is reliable, detail-oriented, and passionate about animal care and hygiene.

What You’ll Do (Duties and Responsibilities)

  • Care for and handle animals with compassion.
  • Regularly clean and empty animal cages and pens.
  • Maintain the cleanliness of the entire Animal Research Centre, including animal rooms, corridors, washrooms, walk-in freezer, and general storerooms.
  • Clean, wash, and refill water bottles and troughs for animals.
  • Clean equipment following the facility’s maintenance plan.
  • Move and prepare heavy animal cages for use.
  • Ensure feed containers are always full.
  • Operate washing machines, cage washers, bottle washers, and autoclaves.
  • Assist with loading, unloading, and packing food in the storeroom.
  • Help with stock-taking tasks.
  • Prepare food and feed animals according to their needs.
  • Create environment enrichment toys to stimulate animals.
  • Assist with safely moving and restraining animals when necessary.
  • Be prepared to work one weekend per month as part of your schedule.

Who We’re Looking For (Requirements)

Inherent Requirements:

  • A minimum of Grade 10 certificate or a National Vocational Certificate on NQF Level 2.
  • At least one (1) year of practical experience in handling animals.

Recommendations (Advantageous):

  • A Grade 12 certificate or a National Vocational Certificate on NQF Level 4.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of animal welfare principles and proper animal handling techniques.

Employment Details

  • Contract Type: Permanent, Full-time
  • Start Date: 1 January 2026, or as soon as possible.
  • Closing Date for Applications: 27 November 2025.
  • Salary: An annual remuneration package ranging from R211,649.67 to R233,097.03, depending on experience, qualifications, and budget availability. This translates to approximately R17,637 to R19,424 per month.
  • Benefits: A comprehensive benefits package including a pension scheme, medical aid, group life insurance, housing allowance, leave and sick leave, a service bonus, and study benefits (subject to specific conditions).
