The University of Johannesburg (UJ) is looking for a dedicated and skilled Technical Assistant II to join our Facilities Management team at UJ Island. This is a full-time, permanent, and live-in position where you will be crucial in ensuring our facilities and equipment operate efficiently, supporting both technical needs and general island logistics, including guest services.

What You’ll Be Doing (Key Responsibilities)

Maintenance and Technical Support at UJ Island:

  • Assist in planning and scheduling installations, maintenance, and repairs of facilities and equipment.
  • Perform routine facility and equipment maintenance and conduct preventative inspections.
  • Monitor and repair facility systems and technical devices, ensuring optimal operation.
  • Support the Facilities Work Request System and complete all related documentation promptly.
  • Participate in preventative maintenance, troubleshoot, dismantle, repair, and reassemble complex equipment.
  • Develop detailed technical specifications and documentation.
  • Oversee and perform duties related to events, including timely set-up and breakdown.

General Support Tasks at UJ Island:

  • Alternate on entry and exit into the island, including game drives and day-to-day transportation.
  • Assist with external guests, including welcoming them, carrying luggage, and addressing issues.
  • Respond to emergency call-ins and serve in the rotation for weekend on-call personnel.
  • Help with game management and dispose of grass, rubble, and tree trimmings.
  • Conduct regular vehicle inspections and report defects immediately.
  • Assist with transporting machines and equipment to and from the island.
  • Perform other general duties and support work required on the Island.
  • Maintain basic health, safety, and environmental measures in the workplace.

Customer Service:

  • Provide excellent customer service and information regarding various maintenance activities to guests and staff.

Occupational Health & Safety:

  • Ensure proper care in the use and maintenance of equipment and supplies.
  • Assist in hazardous waste management and ensure compliance with safety regulatory standards.
  • Promote continuous improvement of workplace safety and environmental practices.

Who We’re Looking For (Requirements)

Minimum Requirements:

  • Grade 12 (NQF 4).
  • Three (3) years of experience in technical and hospitality environments.
  • A valid Code 10 driver’s license with a PrDP (Professional Driving Permit) for people and goods.
  • A valid boat driver’s license (Skipper license).
  • A Certificate in Plumbing, Welding, or Mechanical Engineering.

Competencies and Behavioural Attributes:

  • Motivated team player with a desire to share creative solutions.
  • Strong problem-solving and critical thinking skills, with the ability to manage multiple tasks.
  • Excellent organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills.
  • Good technical background, especially in plumbing.
  • Ability to perform continuous physical work and work under pressure.
  • Proactive, creative, reliable, responsible, and punctual.
  • Good planning and organizing skills, able to work independently and under supervision.
  • Knowledge of Health and Safety within the field of work.
  • Committed to cleanliness, with good vision and physical agility.
  • Ability to swim.

Recommendations:

  • Willingness to undergo further skills training.
  • Willingness to work overtime and be on standby as required.
  • Pneumatic experience.

Working Conditions:

  • This role involves moderate lifting, carrying, and cleaning of equipment.
  • Requires sitting and standing for prolonged periods.
  • Involves working with technology, including electrical power and compressed gases.
  • Physical effort is required, including walking over rough surfaces, bending, crouching, stretching, and lifting moderately heavy items.
  • Daily travel and driving a boat to and from UJ Island are required.
