About the Role: Team Leader II – NSFAS
UJ is seeking a dedicated and experienced Team Leader II to join its Finance: Revenue & Administration division, specifically within Student Finance: Financial Aid, focusing on NSFAS operations. This permanent position, based at the Auckland Park Kingsway Campus, requires a skilled individual to manage daily NSFAS activities, lead a team, and ensure efficient financial aid administration for students.
Key Responsibilities
- Oversee and follow up on outstanding student debts related to NSFAS.
- Authorize journals and process NSFAS student refunds efficiently.
- Administer all daily operational activities concerning NSFAS accounts.
- Approve general payments associated with NSFAS and other financial aid.
- Prepare comprehensive monthly reconciliations.
- Generate detailed analysis and relevant information for management reporting.
- Collaborate with the Senior Manager to manage Student Finance awareness campaigns.
- Manage the implementation of identified strategies within Student Finance.
- Supervise the overall NSFAS function and processes.
- Manage the consent form process and student allowance allocations.
- Perform various ad hoc tasks as requested by the line manager.
- Ensure strict adherence to University policies and procedures regarding NSFAS and financial aid.
- Ensure the timely compilation of the NSFAS Booklet and related procedures.
- Assist the Senior Manager in planning, coordinating, and managing the annual budget for the NSFAS unit.
- Provide relevant statistical data for Management reporting.
- Liaise effectively with clients regarding academic results, arrangements, and NSFAS-related inquiries.
- Build and strengthen relationships with both Internal and External Stakeholders at UJ.
- Communicate with the Student Enrolment Centre as required.
- Serve as a liaison for internal and external auditors during UJ’s annual audit.
- Engage with the SRC on ad hoc situations involving students.
- Manage team members, including preparing work schedules and assigning duties.
- Foster mutual trust, respect, and cooperation among team members.
- Oversee, review, and approve external bursaries and allowances.
Minimum Requirements
Qualifications & Experience
- A National Diploma (NQF Level 6) with Accountancy or a relevant financial qualification.
- A minimum of three (3) to five (5) years of finance-related experience.
- Flexibility to work across all four UJ campuses as and when required.
- Experience with ITS and Oracle systems will be a distinct advantage.
Required Skills & Competencies
- Solid understanding and practical application of basic accounting principles, fair credit practices, and collection regulations.
- Proven ability to accurately calculate, post, and manage accounting figures and financial records.
- Strong customer service orientation and excellent negotiation skills.
- Exceptional accuracy and meticulous attention to detail.
- Advanced computer literacy, particularly in MS Office (Word and Excel).
- Strong accounting skills.
- Ability to work independently and effectively in a high-pressure environment.
- Excellent interpersonal relations skills and a client-service focus.
- Proficient people management and conflict resolution skills.
- Proven ability to build strong relationships with clients and internal departments.
- Outstanding communication, problem-solving, and time management skills.
- High level of efficiency and accountability.
- Good planning, listening, and organizing skills.
Advantageous Skills & Experience
- A Bachelor’s degree (NQF Level 7) with Accountancy or a relevant financial qualification.
- Minimum of three (3) years’ managerial experience within a Student Finance environment.
- Good problem-solving skills.
- Excellent understanding of accounting principles.
- Ability to work under pressure with large volumes of data.
- Strong conflict management and decision-making skills.
- Proficiency in English.
