Sessional Specialist Maxillofacial and Oral Surgeon

The Gauteng Department of Health, in a joint appointment with the University of Pretoria, is seeking skilled and dedicated Sessional Specialist Maxillofacial and Oral Surgeons. We are looking for two professionals to contribute to both clinical service delivery and the academic training of future specialists at the University of Pretoria Oral Health Centre.

  • Remuneration: R646.00 to R853.00 per hour (depending on grade: Grade 1 – R646.00/hour, Grade 2 – R737.00/hour, Grade 3 – R853.00/hour)

What You’ll Do (Key Responsibilities)

As a Sessional Specialist, your primary duties will include:

  • Providing didactic (theory) and clinical teaching to postgraduate students, particularly registrars.
  • Specialising in areas such as dento-facial deformities (Orthognathic), surgical patient rehabilitation (Implantology, including simple dental and zygomatic implants), craniofacial deformities (including cleft lip and palate), and surgical pathology (benign and malignant conditions).
  • Conducting and supervising postgraduate research projects.
  • Delivering essential clinical service to patients.
  • Teaching registrars in the management of emergency patients.

What We’re Looking For (Requirements)

To be successful in this role, you must meet the following criteria:

  • A formal qualification as a specialist in Maxillofacial and Oral Surgery.
  • Current and valid registration with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) as a specialist maxillofacial and oral surgeon in the independent practice category.

Experience or demonstrated interest in any of the following areas will be a strong advantage:

  • Dento-facial deformities (Orthognathic surgery)
  • Rehabilitation of surgical patients (Implantology, including simple dental and zygomatic implants)
  • Craniofacial deformities (e.g., cleft lip and palate)
  • Surgical Pathology (both benign and malignant conditions)
  • Experience in research and the training of registrars.
