Senior Lecturer: Speech Language Pathology

The University of Cape Town (UCT) is seeking a highly qualified and motivated Senior Lecturer in Speech-Language Pathology to join its esteemed Faculty of Health Sciences. This is a full-time, 3-year contract position based in beautiful Cape Town, South Africa.

In this pivotal role, you will contribute significantly to the Speech-Language Pathology programme within the Division of Communication Sciences & Disorders. Your responsibilities will include providing academic leadership, conducting cutting-edge research, educating and supervising both undergraduate and postgraduate students, and contributing to valuable service delivery initiatives. You will also be expected to maintain and advance your own research programme, actively participating in divisional and departmental activities.

The Division of Communication Sciences and Disorders is part of UCT’s Department of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences, a leading institution committed to excellence in health education, research, and community engagement.

Key Requirements for the Role

To be successful in this position, you must meet the following criteria:

  • Hold a doctoral degree in Speech-Language Pathology (candidates with a submitted doctoral thesis for examination will also be considered).
  • Possess experience in teaching at an undergraduate level.
  • Have experience in teaching and research supervision at a postgraduate level.
  • Demonstrate at least two years of clinical experience in Speech-Language Pathology.
  • Exhibit expertise and experience in one or more of the following specialized areas of Speech-Language Pathology: school-aged population, language, literacy, speech sound disorders, voice disorders, and/or fluency.
  • Be currently registered and in good standing with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) as a Speech-Language Therapist or a Speech Language Therapist and Audiologist.
  • Possess excellent interpersonal abilities.
  • Demonstrate excellent written and verbal communication skills.

  • A strong record of publications in relevant academic journals.
  • Proven experience in successfully supervising postgraduate students through to completion.
  • Ability to bring a critical and innovative perspective to the field of Speech-Language Pathology.
  • Experience with curriculum design and development.
  • Evidence of successful efforts in securing funding to support your own research program.

Specific Responsibilities

Your main duties will include:

  • Delivering academic and clinical teaching for undergraduate courses within the Speech-Language Pathology programme and at a broader Departmental level.
  • Providing supervision for both undergraduate and postgraduate research projects.
  • Maintaining and advancing your personal research programme, ensuring it aligns with and promotes critical approaches to teaching and practice.
  • Undertaking leadership, administrative, and management duties within both the Division and Department.
  • Contributing to socially responsive activities that are in line with the University’s vision and mission.

Salary

The annual cost of employment for this 3-year contract position, including benefits, is competitive and ranges between R 795,970 and R 1,147,460.
