Senior Lecturer/Medical Specialist

The University of Cape Town (UCT) invites applications for a permanent, full-time Senior Lecturer/Medical Specialist position within the Division of Family Medicine, part of the Department of Family, Community and Emergency Care in the Faculty of Health Sciences.

This is a unique opportunity for a qualified medical specialist in family medicine to take on a significant scholarly and leadership role. The primary focus of this position is to coordinate postgraduate educational programmes, specifically the MMed and Postgraduate Diploma programmes, within the Division of Family Medicine.

Key Requirements

  • Registered as an Independent Medical Practitioner and Medical Specialist (Family Medicine) with the HPCSA, and in good standing.
  • MBChB with a postgraduate qualification in family medicine (MMed, MPraxMed, MFamMed) and FCFP(SA).
  • Minimum of five years of post-community service in diagnostic clinical practice (primary care level) in either public or private healthcare sectors.
  • At least two years of clinical teaching, learning, and supervision experience with postgraduate students.
  • Solid understanding of the South African healthcare system.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Excellent organisational, planning, and time management skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office 365.
  • Access to personal transport for site visits and off-campus meetings.

Advantageous Skills & Experience

  • Formal academic teaching, learning, and assessment experience with undergraduate and/or postgraduate students in higher education.
  • A postgraduate qualification in health sciences education.
  • Experience in research and postgraduate research supervision.
  • Experience in participating in and leading community-oriented primary care projects with community stakeholders.

Responsibilities

  • Provide academic and clinical leadership and management within the Division of Family Medicine.
  • Serve as the convenor for postgraduate programmes, overseeing the MMed and Postgraduate Diploma.
  • Ensure quality assurance, risk management, and adherence to academic governance processes.
  • Facilitate strong connections between the Division, Department, Faculty, and external stakeholders.
  • Directly and indirectly supervise registrars on the clinical platform.

Salary & Benefits

The appointment will be based on the UCT Academic Clinical Conditions of Service. The annual cost of employment, including benefits, will align with the University’s clinical academic pay line and OSD rates.
