Senior Lecturer/Lecturer/Oral Hygienist
The University of the Western Cape (UWC) is seeking a qualified and passionate Senior Lecturer/Lecturer in Oral Hygiene to join its world-class Faculty of Dentistry. This permanent, full-time position is based at the Tygerberg Campus, Western Cape. UWC’s Faculty of Dentistry is dedicated to promoting oral health through excellent teaching, service, and research.
About the Role
As a Senior Lecturer/Lecturer/Oral Hygienist, you will contribute significantly to the Faculty’s mission. Your primary responsibilities will include:
- Teaching and training students on the clinical platform.
- Clinical teaching of undergraduate students.
- Supervising both undergraduate and postgraduate students.
- Actively participating in research activities and contributing to publications.
- Handling administrative duties related to the post.
- Providing dental services to patients across all platforms serviced by the Faculty of Dentistry.
- Engaging in Community Engagement activities.
Minimum Requirements
To be considered for this vital role, applicants must meet the following criteria:
- A Bachelor of Oral Health degree.
- A Master’s degree in Health Sciences or Education, relevant to Oral Hygiene.
- A minimum of 5 years of teaching experience within a Higher Education Institution.
- Current attachment to a training institution (full or part-time) with involvement in teaching and clinical supervision of undergraduate oral hygiene students.
- Current registration with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA).
- HPCSA registration must include independent practice and the full Oral Hygiene scope of practice as per the Government Gazette, 17th September 2021.
Recommendations & Strong Advantages
The academic level of appointment will depend on your qualifications and experience. The following qualifications and experiences are highly recommended:
- A postgraduate qualification in education.
- Experience in curriculum development.
- A keen interest in teaching and learning, research, and administration.
- Experience in research supervision.
- Publications in the field of Oral Hygiene.
A PhD relevant to Health Sciences or Education pertaining to Oral Hygiene will serve as a strong recommendation for appointment.
Additionally, the following skills and attributes would enhance your application:
- Proficiency in the treatment and management of oral diseases, in line with the latest scope of practice for Oral Hygienists, including knowledge of recent trends in patient management.
- Ability to work effectively in a team.
- Strong interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills.
