About the Faculty of Law and Department of Private Law
We are dedicated to being a premier Faculty of Law and a Private Law Department, deeply rooted in Africa. Our goal is to produce cutting-edge national and internationally relevant research, develop high-calibre legal professionals who can rethink and reshape the legal landscape, create expertise in African and global legal systems, and build strategic partnerships for intellectual growth and global reach. We are looking for an academic who will actively participate in and support this vision and strategic objective.
About the Role
UJ invites applications for a Senior Lecturer position in the Faculty of Law, Department of Private Law. This is a permanent, full-time role based at our Auckland Park Kingsway Campus. You will play a crucial role in shaping the next generation of legal minds, contributing to impactful research, and engaging with the community.
Key Responsibilities
- Teach undergraduate and postgraduate modules in various sub-disciplines of Private Law, including Property Law, Indigenous Law, and Law of Succession.
- Supervise postgraduate students on their dissertations and theses, including at doctoral level.
- Conduct and publish high-quality research in accredited local and international journals, book chapters, and books in the field of Private Law.
- Undertake administrative and committee duties within the Faculty of Law, Department of Private Law, and the broader University of Johannesburg when called upon.
- Actively participate in community engagement initiatives to advance societal engagement and impact.
Minimum Requirements
- A Doctoral Degree (PhD/LLD) in Private Law (specialising in Property Law, Indigenous Law, or Law of Succession).
- At least 3 to 5 years of lecturing experience in the discipline of Private Law.
- A strong and consistent publication track record in reputable and accredited journals, book chapters, and books.
- Demonstrated commitment to research-led teaching, innovation, and research excellence.
- Proven experience in postgraduate student supervision, having successfully supervised at least LLM level students to completion.
- Sound communication skills in English, both written and verbal.
Desirable Skills & Experience
We are looking for candidates who demonstrate:
- Excellent teaching and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with colleagues.
- Good planning and organizational abilities.
- Experience integrating ICT in teaching and learning, including electronic assessment techniques (e.g., Blackboard and Moodle).
- Capacity to administer large undergraduate modules.
- Ability to work well and collegially with others, independently, and effectively within established processes and a pressurised environment.
- Innovative, proactive, and creative thinking.
- High level of integrity and ethical conduct.
- Ability to teach large groups of students.
- Experience in curriculum development and transformation.
- Familiarity with blended learning techniques.
- Experience in compiling and developing study guides.
- Experience in media engagement and writing opinion pieces on matters relevant to the discipline.
- Knowledge of University policies, rules, and regulations.
