About the Department of Civil Engineering Technology

Join the friendly and supportive Department of Civil Engineering Technology at UJ, known for its strong team spirit. This position is part of the Structures, Geotechnics, and Materials (SGM) research group, which boasts many undergraduate and postgraduate students. The department is well-equipped with two advanced laboratories: the Heavy Structures Lab and Light Structures Lab. This role specifically supports the SGM research group and focuses on structural engineering.

Your Role as a Senior Lecturer

We are seeking a Senior Lecturer with extensive industry experience in leading the design and construction of large civil structures. You will play a crucial role in our SGM research group, teaching at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels in structural engineering. As a senior staff member, you will also contribute to academic administration, supervise student research, develop a productive research program, and actively participate in the department’s strategic planning and decision-making.

Key Responsibilities

  • Teach and develop undergraduate and postgraduate modules in structural engineering.
  • Conduct research in the area of structural engineering.
  • Supervise postgraduate students in structural engineering.
  • Actively seek research funding for the SGM research group.
  • Contribute to academic and departmental administration.

Minimum Requirements

To be considered for this exciting opportunity, you should meet the following criteria:

  • An applicable BEng or BSc degree in Civil Engineering, or an equivalent qualification recognized by the Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA) for professional engineer registration.
  • A Doctorate degree in a relevant engineering field, OR an MEng/MSc/MPhil engineering degree combined with at least five years of directly relevant industry experience.
  • A well-proven background in structural engineering, with extensive industry experience leading the design and construction of large structures.
  • Evidence of research experience demonstrated by scholarly publications and/or postgraduate supervision.
  • An excellent academic study record in Civil Engineering.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English.

Required Competencies and Attributes:

  • Strong planning and organizational skills.
  • A team player with good interpersonal skills and the ability to collaborate effectively with colleagues within and outside UJ.
  • A distinguished record of research and scholarly achievements, coupled with an extensive network of collaborators from industry.

Recommendations (Advantageous):

  • Registration as a professional engineer with ECSA.
  • Previous tertiary teaching experience at undergraduate and/or postgraduate level.
  • An extensive network of collaborators from the industry.
  • A high level of independence and self-motivation.
  • The ability or experience to function effectively in a multidisciplinary environment.
