About the Role

As a Safety and Environment Officer, you will be responsible for implementing and continuously improving health, safety, and environmental standards within an manufacturing facility. Your expertise will ensure compliance with South African legislation (like the OHS Act 85 of 1993 and NEMA) and international automotive manufacturing best practices.

What You’ll Do (Key Responsibilities)

• Conduct regular safety audits, comprehensive risk assessments, and facility inspections.
• Ensure strict compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHS Act 85 of 1993).
• Investigate all incidents and near-misses thoroughly, implementing effective corrective and preventive actions.
• Facilitate engaging safety training sessions, informative toolbox talks, and crucial emergency response drills.
• Maintain and update all essential safety documentation, including Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS), and risk registers.
• Monitor and manage environmental aspects such as waste, emissions, and efficient resource usage.
• Ensure full compliance with all relevant environmental legislation (e.g., NEMA, Air Quality Act).
• Maintain robust documentation for the ISO 14001:2015 Environmental Management System.
• Coordinate environmental impact assessments and champion sustainability initiatives.
• Liaise effectively with regulatory bodies and prepare comprehensive reports for environmental audits.

What You’ll Need (Requirements)

• **Education:** Matric (Grade 12) is essential. A National Diploma or Degree in Safety Management, Environmental Science, or a related field is required.
• **Experience:** Minimum of 5 years of experience in Health, Safety, and Environment (HSE) roles, specifically within the manufacturing sector, with a strong preference for automotive experience.
• **Knowledge:** Solid understanding of ISO 45001 (Occupational Health and Safety Management Systems) and ISO 14001 (Environmental Management Systems) standards.
• **Certifications:** NEBOSH, SAMTRAC, or equivalent safety/environmental certifications are highly advantageous.
• **Skills:** Proficiency in MS Office Suite and various HSE management systems.

This full-time position is based onsite in Tongaat, Durban, KwaZulu-Natal.
