This role is within the Faculty of Law, Department of Procedural Law, and is based at our Auckland Park Kingsway Campus. About the Department of Procedural Law
The Faculty of Law and its Department of Procedural Law are committed to producing cutting-edge, nationally and internationally relevant research. We aim to develop high-calibre students who will innovate and reshape the legal landscape, create expertise in African and world legal systems, and consolidate strategic partnerships that stimulate intellectual growth and global impact. The successful candidate will actively support these goals.
Key Responsibilities
As a Professor or Associate Professor, your main duties will include:
- Teaching undergraduate and postgraduate modules in various sub-disciplines of Procedural Law, including Criminal Procedure and Law of Evidence.
- Supervising postgraduate students (dissertations and theses) through to completion.
- Conducting and publishing research in accredited local and international journals, book chapters, and books in the field of Procedural Law.
- Taking on administrative and committee roles within the Faculty of Law, the Department, and the wider University of Johannesburg.
- Mentoring emerging staff members within the Faculty and Department.
- Attracting and sustaining fundraising initiatives to advance teaching and research scholarship.
- Participating in community engagement initiatives to enhance societal engagement and impact.
Minimum Requirements
To be considered for this position, you must have:
- A doctoral degree in Procedural Law (specifically covering Criminal Procedure and Law of Evidence).
- At least 5 years or more of lecturing experience in the discipline of Procedural Law.
- A strong publication track record in reputable and accredited journals, book chapters, and books.
- A strong commitment to research-led teaching, research, and innovation.
- Sound communication skills in English.
- Proven experience in postgraduate supervision, including at doctoral level, with successful student completions.
- An NRF Rating (this is an advantage, especially for the Professor level).
- Evidence of developing external research grant applications and success in securing funding (this is an advantage, especially for the Professor level).
Required Competencies and Attributes
We are looking for candidates who demonstrate:
- Excellent written and verbal English communication skills.
- Excellent teaching skills, good interpersonal skills, and the ability to collaborate effectively with colleagues.
- Good planning and organizational skills.
- Experience in integrating Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in teaching and learning, as well as electronic assessment techniques (e.g., Blackboard and Moodle).
- The capacity to administer large undergraduate modules.
- The ability to work well and collegially with others, adhere to established processes, and work independently or as part of a team.
- Punctuality, innovativeness, proactiveness, and creativity.
- Comprehensive knowledge of various subfields of Procedural Law.
- Great writing and presentation skills.
- A high level of integrity and strong ethical foundation.
Recommendations and Desirable Qualities
The following will be considered an advantage:
- Experience lecturing large groups of students.
- Experience in curriculum development and curriculum transformation.
- Familiarity with blended learning techniques.
- Experience in compiling and developing study guides.
- Experience in media engagement and writing opinion pieces on matters relevant to the discipline.
- Knowledge of University policies, rules, and regulations.
