This is a re-advertisement for a permanent position based at the Auckland Park Kingsway Campus.

About the Faculty of Law & Department of Mercantile Law

We aspire to be a leading Faculty of Law and Mercantile Law Department, anchored in Africa, producing cutting-edge national and internationally relevant research. We aim to deliver high-calibre students who will rethink and reshape the legal landscape, create expertise on African and world legal systems, and consolidate strategic partnerships that stimulate intellectual growth and facilitate global reach and impact. The successful candidate will actively support these goals.

Key Responsibilities

  • Teach undergraduate and postgraduate modules in various Mercantile Law sub-disciplines, including Tax Law, Intellectual Property Law, and Commercial Law.
  • Supervise postgraduate students (dissertations and theses).
  • Conduct and publish research in local, international, and accredited journals, book chapters, books, and monographs within Mercantile Law.
  • Take on administrative and committee roles within the Faculty of Law, Department of Mercantile Law, and the broader University.
  • Mentor emerging staff members.
  • Attract and sustain fundraising initiatives to advance teaching and research.
  • Participate in community engagement initiatives for societal impact.

Minimum Requirements

  • A doctoral degree in Mercantile Law (specifically Corporate Law and Insolvency Law).
  • At least 5 years of lecturing experience in Mercantile Law.
  • A strong publication track record in reputable and accredited journals, book chapters, and books.
  • Strong commitment to research-led teaching, research, and innovation.
  • Sound communication skills in English.
  • Proven experience in postgraduate supervision, including at the doctoral level and successful student completions.
  • An NRF Rating is an advantage, especially for a Professor level.
  • Evidence of developing external research grant applications and success, especially for a Professor level.

  • Excellent written and verbal English communication skills.
  • Excellent teaching and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively.
  • Good planning and organizational skills.
  • Experience with ICT integration in teaching and learning (e.g., Blackboard, Moodle) and electronic assessment.
  • Capacity to administer large undergraduate modules.
  • Ability to work collegially and independently within established processes.
  • Punctuality, innovation, proactivity, and creativity.
  • Knowledge of various Mercantile Law subfields.
  • Ability to work under pressure.
  • Great writing and presentation skills.
  • High level of integrity and ethical foundation.

Recommendations

  • Ability to teach large student groups.
  • Experience lecturing undergraduates.
  • Experience in curriculum development and transformation.
  • Familiarity with blended learning techniques.
  • Experience in compiling and developing study guides.
  • Experience in media engagement and writing opinion pieces on relevant disciplinary matters.
  • Knowledge of University policies, rules, and regulations.
