This re-advertised permanent position is vital in supporting the University’s commitment to societal impact, sustainability, and technological advancement by enhancing teaching and learning programmes within the library.

About the Role: Librarian II (Teaching & Learning)

As a Librarian II focused on Teaching & Learning, you will play a crucial role in supporting various library programmes. Your responsibilities will include:

Key Responsibilities:

  • Support Leadership in Teaching & Learning: Collaborate with other Librarians to evaluate and improve the Library’s teaching and learning activities, and support best practices in information literacy. Stay updated on trends, emerging resources, and pedagogy in critical evaluation, experimentation, adoption, and improvement of information literacy.
  • Support Teaching & Learning Objectives: Assist Librarians in developing user-centered interactive tutorials, course materials, and other learning resources. Maintain awareness of trends and best practices in teaching and learning, staying current on initiatives at peer institutions. Demonstrate interest and capacity in educational technologies, digital media tools (e.g., learning management systems, cloud-based productivity tools, video production), and Generative AI technologies as learning management systems.
  • Coordinate Information Literacy Sessions: Manage schedules for information literacy training, including digital literacy and Generative AI literacy programmes.
  • Engage with Stakeholders: Foster partnerships with university departments, other library sections, and faculty to integrate library learning objectives into the university’s learning management systems.
  • Professional Development: Actively participate in activities to maintain and enhance your professional knowledge, skills, and abilities related to teaching and learning.

Minimum Requirements

To be considered for this exciting opportunity, you should meet the following criteria:

  • Education: A Bachelor’s degree (NQF 7) in Library and Information Science (LIS), Education, Social Sciences, Humanities, or a related field.
  • Experience: A minimum of two (2) years’ experience providing information services in a higher education institution library or a special/research library.
  • Knowledge:
    • Strong understanding of teaching, learning, and e-learning principles.
    • Knowledge of learning outcomes, assessment processes, and the ability to design assessment instruments and analyse results.
    • Technical background with experience developing online learning objects (e.g., library tutorials, videos).
    • In-depth knowledge of contemporary information literacy practices to integrate these into the curriculum for face-to-face, online, and blended learning environments.
    • Awareness of current trends in higher education teaching and learning.
    • Familiarity with educational technologies and digital media tools (e.g., learning management systems, cloud-based productivity tools, video production).
    • Some knowledge of Fourth Industrial Revolution principles and its relevance to education.
    • Some knowledge of Generative AI Literacy and tools.
