The University of Johannesburg (UJ) invites applications for a dedicated and research-active Lecturer in the Department of Statistics, Faculty of Science. This is a re-advertised permanent position based at the Auckland Park Kingsway Campus.

About the Department of Statistics
Located within UJ’s Faculty of Science, the Department of Statistics delivers undergraduate modules across four campuses, serving various faculties. We offer mainstream mathematical statistics programs up to PhD level and have recently launched an Actuarial Science program. Our department is known for its collegial and cooperative atmosphere.
Your Role as a Lecturer
As a Lecturer in Statistics, you will play a crucial role in shaping the next generation of statisticians and contributing to the department’s research excellence.
Key Responsibilities:
- Lecture, coordinate, assess, and tutor large undergraduate service modules in Statistics.
- Conduct active research in theoretical Mathematical Statistics, aligning with existing departmental research interests.
- Supervise MSc and PhD students in Mathematical Statistics to completion.
- Demonstrate a strong commitment to innovative teaching and productive research.
- Develop new course material for theoretical Mathematical Statistics modules.
- Contribute to departmental outreach and community engagement initiatives.
- Undertake other academic or administrative duties as assigned by the Head of Department.
- Be committed to driving 4IR (Fourth Industrial Revolution) initiatives within your teaching and research.
What You’ll Need (Minimum Requirements)
- A Master of Science (MSc) degree in Mathematical Statistics (with a theoretical focus).
- A proven track record of lecturing undergraduate Mathematical Statistics modules.
- Competence to lecture any theoretical topic in Mathematical Statistics for undergraduate programmes.
- Evidence of research output or proof of registration for a PhD in Mathematical Statistics (with a theoretical focus).
- Experience lecturing honours level Mathematical Statistics modules (with a theoretical focus).
- A demonstrated engagement with the scholarship of teaching, such as an abridged teaching evaluation or a teaching portfolio.
- A strong commitment to both high-quality teaching and productive research.
- Sound communication skills in English.
- The ability to develop new undergraduate and postgraduate modules.
- The ability to effectively teach large groups of students.

Recommendations (Bonus Points):
- A PhD in Mathematical Statistics (with a theoretical focus).
- A sustained track record of teaching and research with a specialized course or programme at university level.
- External, national, and international recognition as an authority in theoretical Mathematical Statistics.
- Research specialization that aligns well with existing departmental research interests.
- Successful supervision of MSc and PhD students in theoretical Mathematical Statistics to completion.
- A strong record of engagement with the scholarship of teaching (e.g., comprehensive teaching evaluations or relevant portfolio).
- Experience with innovative teaching techniques incorporating technology.
- An NRF Rating would be a significant advantage.
- Knowledge of university, faculty policies, rules, and regulations.
