The University of Johannesburg (UJ) is looking for a dedicated and qualified Lecturer and Clinical Facilitator for a 2-year fixed-term contract within the Faculty of Health Sciences, Department of Nursing.

About the Role

As a Lecturer (Clinical Facilitator) specializing in Nursing, you will play a crucial role in teaching, research, and community engagement. This position requires a professional nurse and midwife registered with the South African Nursing Council (SANC), with expertise in midwifery and neonatal nursing science.

You will be based at the Doornfontein Campus in Johannesburg.

Key Responsibilities

  • Teach, supervise, and assess undergraduate and postgraduate diploma midwifery students.
  • Prepare study materials and be available for contact sessions with students.
  • Conduct research within the midwifery discipline that aligns with the department’s existing research interests.
  • Contribute to the development and review of midwifery teaching and curricula.
  • Participate in departmental and faculty administration and management tasks.
  • Invigilate university examinations and assessments.
  • Attend official university gatherings, committees, department, and faculty meetings.
  • Engage in University-linked community development projects.
  • Undertake any other duties reasonably requested by the Head of Department and Executive Dean.

Minimum Requirements

  • A Master’s degree (NQF Level 9) in Midwifery.
  • Must be registered with the South African Nursing Council (SANC) as a Professional Nurse and Midwife.
  • Proof of current SANC registration for a post-basic/postgraduate diploma in midwifery qualification.
  • Registration with SANC as a Nurse Educator, Assessor, and Moderator.
  • A minimum of three (3) years of teaching experience in an academic tertiary institution.
  • A minimum of three (3) years of working experience in the relevant midwifery discipline.
  • Experience in clinical accompaniment for undergraduate/post-basic/postgraduate diploma in midwifery students.

Required Competencies and Attributes

  • Excellent understanding of Midwifery and the latest education and clinical practice trends.
  • Proficiency in current assessment and evaluation strategies.
  • Strong organisational and administration skills.
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
  • Effective communication and relationship management skills.
  • Good time management and ability to work under pressure to meet deadlines.
  • Proficiency in English (both verbal and written).
  • Ability to manage your own research group.
  • Computer literacy, especially in educational settings for contact and mobile learning.
  • Strong work ethic and adaptability in the teaching and learning environment.

Recommendations (Advantageous)

  • Experience in using a simulation laboratory.
  • Previous relevant experience within a university environment.
