The University of the Western Cape (UWC), a dynamic and diverse institution rooted in the African continent with a growing global presence, is looking for a dedicated Lecturer in Medical Biosciences. This full-time, permanent position is based at our Main Campus in Bellville, Western Cape. UWC is committed to addressing the developmental needs of South Africa through critical and creative engagement.

This role is within the Faculty of Natural Sciences, which boasts nine academic departments, a School of Pharmacy, and several world-class research institutes. The faculty is known for its internationally recognised quality research and excellence in learning and teaching. The Department of Medical Biosciences (MBS) focuses on Physiology, Anatomy, and Medical Microbiology, providing essential courses across multiple faculties.

About the Role

As a Lecturer in Physiology, you will play a vital role in educating the next generation of scientists and healthcare professionals. You will be responsible for teaching, conducting research, supervising students, and contributing to the department’s administrative and community engagement activities.

Key Responsibilities

  • Facilitate engaging learning and teaching activities for both undergraduate and postgraduate students in Physiology.
  • Teach specific Physiology content across various modules within the Medical Biosciences Department.
  • Conduct high-quality research and publish your findings in the field of Physiology.
  • Provide supervision and guidance to undergraduate and postgraduate research students.
  • Contribute to curriculum development and assessment processes.
  • Participate actively in community engagement and outreach initiatives.
  • Undertake administrative duties within the Department and Faculty as required.
  • Perform any other duties assigned by the Head of Department.

Minimum Requirements

  • An MSc qualification in a Physiology research field, with current registration for a PhD in Physiology or a related field, and a clear plan for its completion.
  • Demonstrated experience in facilitating learning and teaching within the field of Physiology.
  • Evidence of high-quality, peer-reviewed research outputs.
  • A proven record of supervising postgraduate research students at Honours level.
  • Active participation in community engagement activities that integrate with learning, teaching, and/or research.

Key Competencies

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English.
  • Strong presentation and facilitation abilities.
  • Adaptability and the capacity to thrive in a diverse environment.
  • A student-focused approach to education.
  • Effective planning and organising skills.
  • Proficiency in computer literacy and e-learning tools.
  • Technical expertise and professional knowledge in your discipline, including a strong understanding of learning and teaching, research, community engagement, and professional leadership.
  • Clear demonstration of the ability, or knowledge of key steps, to independently conduct research.

Advantageous

  • Experience in teaching Microbiology and/or Immunology will be a strong advantage.
