UJInvnt (Pty) Ltd, an Intellectual Property (IP) Holding Company associated with the University of Johannesburg, is seeking a dedicated and experienced Financial Manager. This is a 3-year contract position, essential for guiding our financial operations and ensuring we meet our strategic goals and comply with all financial standards.

About UJInvnt (Pty) Ltd

UJInvnt is an Intellectual Property (IP) Holding Company whose primary purpose is to acquire, manage, exploit, license, or sub-license intellectual property rights such as patents, trademarks, copyrights, brand names, and technical ‘know-how’.

Our Key Objectives:

  • To commercialize opportunities arising from the University’s activities, including Intellectual Property (IP), through various means like licensing, selling IP assets, and holding equity stakes in new ventures with outside investors.
  • To provide technical and training services, consultancy services, and specialized courses.
  • To act as the Holding Company for commercial activities, holding shares on behalf of the Shareholder in other subsidiary companies.

About the Role: Financial Manager (3-Year Contract)

As our Financial Manager, you will oversee all financial operations, ensuring they align with UJInvnt’s goals and regulatory standards. This role requires strategic oversight of budgeting, forecasting, financial reporting, and risk management. You will be instrumental in driving financial efficiency, optimizing cash flow, and providing actionable insights to support executive decision-making.

The ideal candidate will offer critical financial insights to support strategic decisions and operational efficiency. This includes preparing comprehensive financial reports, managing budgets and forecasts, analyzing costs, and ensuring full compliance with financial regulations. You will collaborate cross-functionally to promote financial health and help achieve our organizational goals.

What You’ll Do (Responsibilities):

Financial Planning and Analysis

  • Lead the annual budgeting process, quarterly forecasting, and long-term financial planning.
  • Analyze financial performance against targets and recommend necessary corrective actions.

Financial Reporting

  • Prepare accurate and timely monthly and quarterly financial reports (Profit & Loss, balance sheets, cash flow statements).
  • Present management accounts to clients, providing relevant commentary and domain-specific input.

Budgeting & Forecasting

  • Lead the creation of the annual budget and regularly update financial forecasts.
  • Analyze variances against targets to identify deviations and opportunities.

Cash Flow Management

  • Monitor cash flow, liquidity, and working capital to ensure operational stability, including managing the company’s bank accounts.
  • Oversee the bank accounts of company subsidiaries.
  • Optimize accounts receivable/payable processes and investment strategies.
  • Process the remuneration for board members.
  • Ensure timely payment to all service providers.
  • Evaluate cost structures, identify potential savings, and provide advice on pricing and profitability (cost analysis).

Strategic Support

  • Provide data-driven insights to support business planning, investment decisions, and Key Performance Indicators (KPIs).
  • Partner with senior leadership to evaluate potential mergers, acquisitions, and capital investments.
  • Develop robust financial models to assess Return on Investment (ROI) and scenario-based outcomes.

Compliance and Risk Management

  • Ensure strict adherence to accounting standards (GAAP/IFRS), tax regulations, and internal controls.
  • Mitigate financial risks through proactive audits and effective policy enforcement.
  • Assist with internal and external audits.
  • Contribute to the development and implementation of financial risk mitigation strategies.

Process Improvement

  • Identify opportunities to optimize accounting systems and reporting tools for greater efficiency.

Financial Analyses and Investment Support

  • Conduct thorough financial analyses for mergers, expansions, or cost-reduction initiatives within investee companies.
  • Manage the acquisition of royalty certificates, receive royalties, and oversee their distribution/allocation as required.

What You’ll Need (Minimum Requirements):

Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in Accounting/Finance or an MBA is required.
  • CPA/CMA certification is highly preferred.

Experience:

  • 5–7 years of proven experience in financial management, Financial Planning & Analysis (FP&A), or corporate finance roles.
  • Demonstrable experience in Venture Capital, Private Equity, Investment, Impact Investment, Banking, and Development Finance.

Skills:

  • Proficiency in ERP systems (e.g., SAP, Oracle), advanced Excel (pivot tables, macros), and Business Intelligence (BI) tools (Power BI, Tableau).
  • Expertise in financial modeling, variance analysis, and scenario planning.
  • Knowledge of Power BI, SQL, or automation tools.
  • Strong leadership, strategic thinking, and stakeholder communication skills.
  • Excellent analytical, communication, and problem-solving abilities; highly detail-oriented.
  • A valid driver’s license.

  • Strong understanding of business principles and processes.
  • Proven experience with budget processes.
  • Proficiency in electronic financial processing systems (e.g., Oracle, ITS, GL, Wand, I-Procurement).
  • Solid understanding of accounting principles in practice.
  • Good understanding of relevant company policies and procedures.
  • Ability to perform accurate reconciliations between different modules and systems.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication, coupled with strong conflict resolution skills.
  • Ability to make quick and effective decisions.
  • Proactive in identifying and resolving issues.
  • Strong time management skills, for both personal tasks and team coordination.
  • Exceptional problem-solving abilities.
  • Ability to plan effectively for both short and long-term goals.
  • Capacity to multitask efficiently.
