Finance Coordinator

The University of Cape Town (UCT) is looking for two dedicated Finance Coordinators to join its Finance Department in Cape Town.

About the Role

As a Finance Coordinator, you will play a crucial role in managing the university’s debtors, focusing on either Research & Foreign accounts or Commercial & Ad hoc accounts. Your primary goal will be to ensure the accurate creation and maintenance of debtor records, coordinate invoicing and receipting processes, and manage timely revenue recognition.

Key Responsibilities

  • Coordinate and manage local and foreign invoicing, ensuring proper revenue recognition from various sources like contractual agreements, clinical trials, and grants.
  • Oversee the sales order processing to ensure revenue is recognized promptly based on agreements and milestones.
  • Keep customer master data and contact details updated in the SAP SD/AR financial system.
  • Coordinate local and foreign currency receipting, including handling exchange rate differences.
  • Reconcile bank general ledger accounts, allocating unidentified amounts and managing foreign currency transactions.
  • Ensure all financial transactions comply with UCT policies, procedures, and statutory requirements through documentation validation.
  • Act as a specialist in research invoicing and foreign currency receipting, providing expert service to the UCT community.
  • Participate in ERP systems user testing for new functionalities and improvements.
  • Provide backup support for other Finance Coordinators within the Debtors’ section.
  • Assist with general operations and efficient functioning of the Debtors’ Office, including ad hoc duties.

Requirements

To be considered for this position, you should have:

  • Qualification: A National Diploma or equivalent accounting qualification (NQF 6) PLUS at least 3 years’ recent experience in Finance/Debtors/Accounts Receivable. OR, if qualified by experience, a Matric (NQF 4) with accounting PLUS 5 years’ recent experience in similar Finance/Debtors functions.
  • System Experience: 3-5 years of experience with an ERP (Enterprise Resource Planning) system in a medium to large organisation.
  • Skills: Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication; strong planning, organising, and problem-solving abilities; meticulous attention to detail; ability to work under pressure, multitask, and work accurately with minimal supervision.
  • Attributes: Client-focused, service-oriented, team player, ability to work independently, initiative, flexibility, high level of honesty and integrity.
  • Computer Literacy: Intermediate proficiency in MS Office.
  • Knowledge: Understanding of foreign currencies, exchange rate fluctuations, accounts receivable functions, statutory compliance, and finance policies.

Advantageous Skills & Experience

  • Exposure to SAP modules like Sales & Distribution (SD), Accounts Receivable (AR), and Business Objects (BO).
  • Experience with contract management databases (e.g., UCT Electronic Research Administration System – ERA).
  • Previous experience within the higher education sector.

Salary

The estimated annual cost of employment for 2025, including benefits, ranges from R513,345 to R603,933.
