Director: Maintenance Management (P5) (Facilities Management) (5 Year Fixed-Term Contract)

The University of Johannesburg (UJ) is looking for a dedicated and experienced Director of Maintenance Management to join its Facilities Management team. This is a crucial leadership role, responsible for overseeing the maintenance and upkeep of all university facilities, equipment, buildings, and grounds, ensuring everything runs smoothly and safely. This is a 5-year fixed-term contract position based at the Auckland Park Kingsway Campus.

Your Role and Responsibilities

As the Director: Maintenance Management, you will provide strategic leadership and hands-on management for all maintenance activities across UJ’s campuses. Your key responsibilities will include:

  • Developing and implementing the Facilities Management Maintenance Management Strategy, aligning it with UJ’s overall strategic goals.
  • Creating and updating maintenance policies, processes, and procedures to ensure effective strategy implementation.
  • Providing essential input on infrastructure and equipment maintenance for the University Master Plan.
  • Developing and managing comprehensive maintenance plans for all infrastructure and equipment.
  • Implementing and managing Facilities Management Systems to support infrastructure and equipment maintenance.
  • Overseeing the sourcing, implementation, and management of maintenance-related contracts.
  • Directing the compilation, updating, and maintenance of all facilities and infrastructure records.
  • Leading the maintenance efforts for all campus facilities and infrastructure.
  • Establishing specifications and standards for all University components.
  • Actively participating in the University’s Smart Campus initiatives.
  • Identifying and driving continuous improvement initiatives and best practices in maintenance.
  • Managing the entire lifecycle (“cradle-to-grave”) of all UJ land and engineered assets.
  • Providing strategic leadership and direction to external contractors across all four campuses.
  • Compiling and managing annual and multi-year maintenance budgets efficiently.
  • Ensuring a safe and conducive environment for all UJ stakeholders (internal and external).
  • Promoting a healthy working environment for all staff and contractors.
  • Ensuring strict compliance with statutory requirements, including the Occupational Health and Safety Act.
  • Adhering to and enforcing UJ standards, policies, processes, and procedures.
  • Preparing detailed reports for University Executives, Committees of Council, Treasury, and the Department of Higher Education.

Who We’re Looking For (Minimum Requirements)

To be successful in this role, you will need a strong background in engineering and significant management experience:

  • A Postgraduate qualification in Engineering (NQF Level 8).
  • A Government Certificate of Competence (GCC Factories Certification).
  • At least ten (10) years of Maintenance Management experience in a multi-functional environment.
  • A minimum of five (5) years of Senior Management experience.

Key Competencies and Attributes:

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and other relevant computer skills.
  • Proven ability to build and maintain strong relationships and communicate effectively with all levels of management.
  • Skill in developing, interpreting, and applying policies and regulations.
  • Excellent customer service, people management, and team leadership skills.

Recommendations (Advantageous):

  • Professional registration with the Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA).
  • Working knowledge of facilities management software systems for managing and maintaining infrastructure and related assets.
  • Experience in developing Maintenance Strategies and Policies.
  • Proven Contract Management experience.
  • A Post Graduate Business Qualification.
  • Five (5) years of experience in implementing and managing the Occupational Health & Safety Act and other relevant legislative requirements.
