

Director: Centre for Cancer Research (CCR)
Are you a visionary leader passionate about making a difference in cancer research? The University of Cape Town (UCT) is seeking a dedicated Director for its Centre for Cancer Research (CCR) within the Faculty of Health Sciences. This is a five-year contract position based in beautiful Cape Town.
About the Centre for Cancer Research (CCR)
The Centre for Cancer Research (CCR) is an exciting initiative by UCT’s Faculty of Health Sciences, committed to tackling the growing burden of cancer. The CCR aims to strengthen and promote interdisciplinary cancer research, ultimately improving patient care, survival, and quality of life for those affected by cancer in Africa and beyond.
About the Role
As the Director, you will lead the transformation of the existing Cancer Research Initiative into a UCT-accredited CCR. You will provide strategic leadership, secure vital funding, and ensure the Centre’s long-term sustainability. Your work will involve developing research platforms, supporting both new and experienced cancer researchers, promoting community engagement, and driving impactful research that influences policy for better cancer prevention, diagnosis, and comprehensive management.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide strategic leadership and management for the CCR.
- Secure funding and resources to ensure the CCR’s sustainability and growth.
- Lead the development and maintenance of cutting-edge cancer research platforms.
- Oversee grant proposals and fundraising efforts to expand the Centre’s programs.
- Develop and implement a research capacity development strategy in collaboration with stakeholders.
- Establish and strengthen local and global collaborations with academic institutions, healthcare facilities, government agencies, NGOs, and industry partners.
- Engage with policymakers to translate research findings into evidence-based cancer prevention and control policies.
- Create a community engagement platform to involve UCT researchers from diverse backgrounds in cancer-related research.
- Enhance the CCR’s and UCT’s reputation through high-quality cancer research and effective communication to the public and scientific community.
- Work towards achieving University Research Committee (URC) accreditation for the CCR.
Minimum Requirements
- A PhD, MBChB, or an equivalent degree in a relevant field (e.g., oncology, epidemiology, molecular biology, public health, global health).
- At least 5 years of experience in cancer research, including leadership roles in academic or research settings.
- A proven track record in securing research funding.
- Strong knowledge of national and international health research funding environments.
- Experience as a Principal Investigator (PI) of a cancer research study.
- Excellent business planning, conceptual, and management skills.
- Demonstrated ability to build and maintain interdisciplinary collaborations.
- Experience engaging with policymakers, funding agencies, and international organizations.
- Comprehensive knowledge of the local and international cancer research landscape.
- Solid teamwork and interpersonal skills, with the ability to communicate effectively with various stakeholders.
- Ability to exercise independent judgment and apply creative problem-solving techniques.
- Demonstrated experience in cancer/research teaching and supervision.

Salary
The annual cost of employment is dependent on the level of appointment (Associate Professor or Professor), which will be based on your current position, experience, and the Faculty’s performance expectations:
- At Associate Professor Level: Between R941,135 and R1,378,741 annually.
- At Professor Level: Between R1,091,660 and R1,694,867 annually.
