The Gauteng Department of Health is seeking a dedicated and experienced Deputy Manager Medical Physicist Grade 1 to join the Radiation Oncology Directorate at Chris Hani Baragwanath Academic Hospital. About the Role

As a Deputy Manager Medical Physicist, you will be crucial in ensuring radiation safety, implementing quality control programs, and providing expert support across various medical departments. You will work within the Radiation Oncology directorate, upholding the highest standards of patient care and staff protection.

What You’ll Do (Key Responsibilities)

Your main duties will include, but are not limited to:

  • Reviewing radiation safety procedures to ensure full compliance with regulatory requirements.
  • Providing comprehensive training to radiation workers on all radiation protection protocols.
  • Monitoring personnel radiation exposure and preparing over-exposure reports for the Department of Health (DoH:RC/SAHPRA).
  • Overseeing patient radiation doses, including diagnostic reference levels (DRLs), and preventing radiation incidents in diagnostic radiology.
  • Acquiring and administering personnel radiation monitoring devices (e.g., TLD badges and alarm dosimeters).
  • Performing calculations and inspections for facility shielding in accordance with national regulations.
  • Acting on behalf of license holders, taking full responsibility for the entire scope of radiation protection.
  • Developing and directing quality control (QC) programs to ensure safety procedures, improve image quality, identify uncertainty sources, and comply with regulations.
  • Conducting acceptance testing for newly installed imaging systems to verify vendor specifications.
  • Implementing regular quality control programs to guarantee the safety of both staff and patients.
  • Ensuring that all activity measuring instruments (radionuclide calibrators and survey meters) are calibrated against national standards.
  • Reviewing and updating documentation, including procedure manuals and policy documents.
  • Ensuring correct activity is administered to patients using radionuclide calibrators.
  • Monitoring the administration of radioactivity sources (e.g., I-131 and Lu-177) to patients for therapeutic procedures.
  • Measuring the sensitivity of gamma cameras/SPECT scanners for activity/count estimation.
  • Providing support to Radiography, Radiology, Nuclear Medicine, Radiotherapy, Oncology, and other institutions within the cluster.
  • Evaluating all facilities and procedures for occupational or public safety by performing radiation surveys.
  • Participating in drafting/writing specifications before purchasing new radionuclide calibrators or imaging systems.
  • Working full hours per week and being available for overtime when requested.

What We’re Looking For (Requirements)

  • An appropriate qualification that allows registration with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) as a Medical Physicist.
  • Current registration with the HPCSA for 2025/2026 is essential.
  • A minimum of three (3) years of relevant experience after registering as a Medical Physicist.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of Intensity-Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT) and Stereotactic Radiotherapy.
  • Advanced knowledge of medical physics equipment and specifications.
  • Key Skills: Excellent communication, strong interpersonal skills, a proven excellent health record, superior problem-solving abilities, initiative, computer literacy (MS Office, Excel, PowerPoint), the ability to communicate effectively with people at different levels and backgrounds, sound organizational skills, good telephone etiquette, the ability to work under pressure, and to take initiative and plan effectively.
