

Data Analyst: Data Interpretation and Visualisation (P7)
Are you passionate about turning data into actionable insights and creating compelling visual stories? The University of Johannesburg (UJ) is looking for a talented Data Analyst to join its Centre for Academic Technologies (CAT) on a permanent basis.
About the Role
As a Data Analyst at UJ’s Centre for Academic Technologies (CAT), you will play a crucial role in supporting teaching and learning through innovative technologies. Your main goal will be to develop, maintain, and support bespoke technologies for teaching, learning, and research by interpreting complex data and presenting it in an easy-to-understand visual format.
Key Responsibilities:
- Understand and support the use of teaching and learning technologies for staff and students.
- Work with data accurately, using various statistical techniques to develop and design timely reports.
- Create effective data visualisations that meet stakeholder needs.
- Gather accurate and reliable data from both internal and external sources for reporting and planning.
- Interpret data and present findings to stakeholders, focusing on teaching & learning activities like student progress tracking and learning analytics.
- Build strong relationships across teams to improve collaboration and innovation.
- Test completed projects against specifications to ensure desired outcomes.
- Support capacity building within CAT by providing data and analysis for planning.
- Manage detailed teaching & learning processes, including analysing current and historical Learning Management System (LMS) trends.
- Monitor, identify, and analyse trends in projects related to student success.
- Design intuitive, user-centred visualisations and multimedia to communicate complex data.
- Craft engaging data narratives that lead to actionable insights.
- Transform analytical findings into accessible formats for diverse audiences (academics, managers, students).
- Maintain multimedia assets in line with UJ’s branding standards.
What You’ll Need
Minimum Requirements:
- A Bachelor’s degree (NQF 7) in Information Science, Knowledge Management, or Statistics.
- At least three (3) years of experience in data extraction, analysis, and visualisation.
- Proven ability to work with, analyse, and interpret data effectively.
- Knowledge of accessibility standards for data visualisations (WCAG).
Key Competencies and Attributes:
- Expertise in data visualisation tools (e.g., Power BI, Tableau).
- Proficiency in multimedia production software (video editing, animation).
- Strong understanding of visual design principles and information architecture.
- Ability to translate complex data into compelling visual stories for various audiences.
- Proven experience in data mining and data creation.
- Experience in a detailed planning environment.
- Ability to perform well under pressure.
- Excellent writing, oral, and electronic communication skills.
- Proven ability to produce high-level proposals and reports.
- Excellent presentation skills.
Recommendations (Nice-to-haves):
- An Honour’s degree, or equivalent experience in a relevant field (Information Science, Knowledge Management, or Statistics).
- Experience working in the higher education sector.
- Knowledge of trends in national and international higher education.
- Certification in specialised visualisation tools (e.g., Power BI).
- Understanding of user experience (UX) design principles.
