The University of the Western Cape (UWC) is a vibrant, diverse, and dynamic institution seeking a dedicated and experienced Campus Protection Services Coordinator to join their team in Bellville. This crucial role is key to ensuring the safety and security of students, staff, guests, and property across the campus.

About the Role

As the Coordinator for Campus Protection Services, you will be a vital leader, responsible for overseeing all security operations. Your primary goal will be to create and maintain a safe environment for the entire university community. You will report directly to the Manager: Campus Protection Services (CPS) and provide expert advice on all security matters related to campus activities, events, and various institutional platforms.

Key Responsibilities

  • Plan, organise, control, and monitor security resources and team performance.
  • Allocate resources and implement security activities effectively.
  • Ensure the protection and safety of students, staff, guests, and university property.
  • Adapt protection services to align with evolving university activities and events.
  • Proactively identify potential and actual risks or threats to campus safety and implement mitigation strategies.
  • Conduct continuous risk assessments related to safety and respond appropriately to identified risks.
  • Facilitate training for security staff and the wider campus community on personal safety and property protection.
  • Manage and plan security for campus events.
  • Ensure compliance with all relevant security laws and regulations.
  • Prepare and present reports to management and various governance platforms.
  • Design and implement policies and standard operating procedures (SOPs) that support health, safety, and environmental initiatives.
  • Compile reports for various constituents and to meet institutional requirements.
  • Accurately and promptly record all incidents on the university system, ensuring appropriate response and resolution.
  • Communicate effectively with relevant stakeholders.
  • Implement various safety campaigns, including crime prevention initiatives.
  • Foster strong relationships with both internal and external stakeholders.
  • Ensure the implementation of university policies, procedures, and processes.
  • Oversee the Performance Development System and activities related to the university’s Integrated Talent Management Framework.

Minimum Requirements

  • Senior Certificate (Grade 12).
  • A Diploma in Security Management.
  • At least 5 years of experience in a security-related field.
  • A minimum of 3 years of experience in a management or supervisory capacity within a security-related field.
  • Current PSIRA Registration: Grade “A” certification.
  • Valid Driver’s License (Code 8 / EB) with at least 2 years of driving experience.

Skills and Competencies

  • Working knowledge of CCTV, Alarm Monitoring, Access Control, and Electronic Incident Recording systems.
  • Proficiency in First Aid, Fire Fighting, and Emergency Building Evacuations.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Strong operational management skills for site security.
  • Experience in dealing with employee/labour relations and disciplinary matters.
  • Basic knowledge of Occupational Health and Safety, including identifying safety and security hazards.
  • Computer literacy, with strong report writing and administration skills.
  • Knowledge of managing protests on campus.
  • Ability to conduct Site Threat Risk Assessments.
  • Experience in updating Site Operational Procedures (SOPs).
  • Understanding of SASRIA application in Event management.

  • Proven advanced computer literacy skills.
  • Prior experience working at a tertiary institution.
  • Experience within a Law Enforcement Agency.
