

CLINICAL PROGRAMME COORDINATOR: INFECTION PREVENTION & CONTROL (IPC) GRADE 1
Are you an experienced and dedicated Professional Nurse with a passion for infection prevention and control? The Department of Health is seeking a highly skilled Clinical Programme Coordinator to join the NURSING SERVICES team at the Wits Oral Health Centre.
About the Role
As the Clinical Programme Coordinator for Infection Prevention & Control (IPC), you will play a crucial role in ensuring the highest standards of health and safety within the institution. This is a vital position responsible for implementing and overseeing comprehensive IPC programmes, waste management, and environmental health initiatives.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the implementation of the National Infection Prevention and Control Strategic Framework.
- Develop and enforce Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for IPC, waste management, environmental health, cleaning, and medical device decontamination.
- Serve as the Waste Management Officer, ensuring compliance with environmental health standards.
- Ensure the institution meets Ideal Hospital Realisation Framework, WHO, and national IPC standards.
- Organise and conduct training sessions on IPC, Healthcare Waste Management, and environmental health.
- Prepare and submit monthly, quarterly, and annual compliance reports.
- Conduct regular audits and spot checks to monitor adherence to IPC, waste management, antimicrobial stewardship, respiratory hygiene, and healthcare-associated infection surveillance, providing feedback and recommendations to management.
- Develop and implement outbreak response plans in line with national guidelines.
- Establish and lead IPC and Healthcare Worker (HCW) champion programmes, facilitating regular meetings to address gaps.
- Collaborate with stakeholders, including Supply Chain, to ensure adequate and appropriate resources for the IPC programme.
- Oversee the development of systems and processes for sterilisation and cleaning departments to meet IPC and HCWM requirements.
- Contribute to the demand plan, ensuring timely procurement of essential items.
- Organise awareness campaigns aligned with WHO and National Department of Health calendars.
What You’ll Need (Requirements)
- A valid Grade 12 Certificate.
- A basic qualification (Diploma/Degree) in Nursing accredited with SANC (Government Notice 425) or an equivalent qualification allowing registration as a Professional Nurse.
- A minimum of 7 years of relevant nursing experience after registering with SANC as a General Professional Nurse.
- A qualification in Infection Prevention and Control from a recognised Higher Learning institution.
- At least 5 years of working experience in an Infection Prevention and Control unit, with a minimum of 2 years in a Public Health environment.
- Must be computer literate with strong communication and presentation skills.
- In-depth knowledge of IPC regulations, guidelines, waste management, environmental health, decontamination of medical devices, and respiratory hygiene.
- Ability to align current health and public policies with IPC programme implementation.
- Proven ability to work independently and effectively under pressure.
- A valid driver’s licence would be an added advantage.
Salary & Benefits
The successful candidate will receive an attractive annual package ranging from R601 638.00 to R629 121.00, commensurate with experience and qualifications.
Location
This position is based at the Wits Oral Health Centre.
