The Department of Infrastructure Development is seeking a Chief Engineer to join its Engineering Services Directorate in Johannesburg. About the Role
As Chief Engineer: Mechanical, you will be a key leader in ensuring the operational excellence and strategic development of mechanical engineering services within the department. This role involves overseeing designs, managing maintenance strategies, pioneering new services, and leading a team of professionals.

Key Responsibilities
Your main duties will include, but are not limited to:
- Performing final reviews and approvals of new engineering designs and audits.
- Co-ordinating design efforts and integration across various disciplines.
- Monitoring and pioneering new engineering services and deployed technologies.
- Managing the execution of comprehensive maintenance strategies.
- Setting and monitoring engineering maintenance standards and service levels.
- Allocating, controlling, and reporting on all resources effectively.
- Compiling risk logs and managing significant risks.
- Providing expert technical consulting services for engineering-related matters.
- Managing and implementing knowledge sharing initiatives within the department.
- Ensuring the availability and management of funds for MTEF objectives.
- Managing the operational capital project portfolio and commercial value-add of programmes.
- Facilitating innovation proposals.
- Managing expenditure according to budget and ensuring cash flow.
- Leading, developing, and managing human resources within the mechanical engineering discipline.
- Setting and monitoring subordinates’ performance standards.
Who We Are Looking For (Requirements)
- Qualification: A Degree (NQF 7) in Mechanical Engineering (B Eng/ BSc Eng) or an equivalent qualification recognised by SAQA.
- Experience: A minimum of six (6) years of post-qualification experience as a registered Professional Engineer.
- Registration: Compulsory registration with ECSA (Engineering Council of South Africa) as a Professional Engineer.
- Licence: A valid Driver’s Licence.
Salary & Benefits
This full-time position offers an attractive all-inclusive package ranging from R 1,266,450.00 to R 2,388,657.00 per annum. The package includes a basic salary (70%) and a flexible portion (30%) structured in terms of applicable rules, including the state’s contribution to the Government Employees Pension Fund (13% of basic salary).
Work Location
This position is based at the Head Office of the Department of Infrastructure Development in Johannesburg, Gauteng.
