Associate Professor /Senior Lecturer – Mathematics Education

The School of Education (SOE) at the University of Cape Town (UCT), within the Faculty of Humanities, is seeking a highly skilled and dedicated academic to join their team as either an Associate Professor or Senior Lecturer in Mathematics Education.

This pivotal role involves contributing to initial teacher education through the Post-Graduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) programme, continuous professional development via the Advanced Certificate in Teaching, and advanced postgraduate studies in Mathematics Education (BEd Honours, MEd, and PhD supervision).

Key Responsibilities

As an Associate Professor or Senior Lecturer, you will be expected to:

  • Teach PGCE methodology courses, focusing on Mathematics and Mathematical Literacy teaching for both Senior Phase and Further Education and Training.
  • Deliver postgraduate mathematics education courses at Honours and Masters levels, covering both primary and high school contexts.
  • Supervise postgraduate students at Honours, Masters, and PhD levels, with a focus on both primary and high school mathematics education.
  • Conduct teaching practice supervision for PGCE students in schools.
  • Actively engage in and publish research in the field of mathematics education.
  • Contribute to the administration of the department, faculty, and the wider university.
  • Participate in social responsiveness activities to benefit the broader education sector, especially mathematics education.

Requirements for Associate Professor

To be considered for the **Associate Professor** position, you must have:

  • A PhD in Mathematics or Mathematics Education.
  • A strong background in mathematics (equivalent to third-year university level).
  • An appropriate international standing within the field of Mathematics Education.
  • A strong track record of research-based, peer-reviewed publications suitable for the rank of Associate Professor.
  • Extensive experience in teaching mathematics education at postgraduate level.
  • Proven experience in supervising student research at Honours, Masters, and PhD levels in mathematics education.
  • A demonstrated track record of leadership within an academic institution.

Requirements for Senior Lecturer

To be considered for the **Senior Lecturer** position, you must have:

  • A PhD in Mathematics or Mathematics Education.
  • A strong background in mathematics (equivalent to third-year university level).
  • An appropriate national standing within the field of Mathematics Education, suitable for the rank of Senior Lecturer.
  • A track record of research-based, peer-reviewed publications suitable for the rank of Senior Lecturer.
  • Experience in teaching mathematics education at postgraduate level.
  • Proven experience in supervising student research at Honours, Masters, and PhD levels in mathematics education.
  • A track record of leadership appropriate for the Senior Lecturer level.

Advantageous Qualifications and Experience

The following experiences would be highly beneficial for this role:

  • Experience in mathematics teacher education.
  • Previous experience in high school teaching.
  • Familiarity with primary school mathematics teaching and learning.

Salary Information

The annual cost of employment for 2025, including benefits, is:

  • Associate Professor: R 1,378,741
  • Senior Lecturer: R 1,147,460
