The University of the Western Cape (UWC) is looking for a dynamic and experienced Associate Professor to join its Institute for Microbial Biotechnology and Metagenomics (IMBM) within the Department of Biotechnology. This is a full-time, permanent position based at our Main Campus in Bellville, Western Cape, starting from 1 April 2026 or as soon as possible thereafter.

About the Institute for Microbial Biotechnology and Metagenomics (IMBM)

IMBM is a self-funded, flagship research entity within the Department of Biotechnology. We are renowned for advancing high-impact, interdisciplinary research in microbial biotechnology and bioinnovation. Our work aligns strategically with national imperatives and global scientific frontiers, contributing significantly to undergraduate teaching, postgraduate training, infrastructure stewardship, and research excellence. We drive UWC’s strategic research agenda through cutting-edge “omics” approaches and industry-driven microbial technologies, supported by strong national and international collaborations.

Key Responsibilities

  • Facilitate learning and teaching at undergraduate levels, with a focus on biochemistry.
  • Undertake curriculum development and assessment.
  • Lead independent, high-impact research initiatives aligned with IMBM’s strategic focus, enhancing international visibility and academic reputation.
  • Provide supervision for undergraduate, postgraduate (MSc and PhD), and postdoctoral researchers in microbial biotechnology, contributing to research productivity and capacity building.
  • Provide academic leadership and administrative support.
  • Participate actively in community engagement and outreach programs.
  • Contribute meaningfully to the financial sustainability of IMBM by securing external and donor funding, cultivating industry partnerships, leading collaborative grant initiatives, and advancing income-generating platforms (e.g., core research facilities, contract research, intellectual property commercialization).
  • Fulfil any other duties assigned by the IMBM Director.

Minimum Requirements

  • A PhD in Microbiology, Biochemistry, or a closely related discipline.
  • Demonstrated experience in facilitating learning and teaching within biotechnology, specifically biochemistry.
  • A strong record of quality, internationally peer-reviewed publications in microbial biotechnology.
  • An excellent record of successful postgraduate supervision at both MSc and PhD levels.
  • A proven track record of securing competitive funding from diverse external sources as the principal investigator.
  • Evidence of expertise, national standing, and an international presence in the field of microbial biotechnology.
  • Demonstrated integration of community engagement with learning, teaching, and/or research activities.

  • Adaptability, commitment, and leadership as a senior member of a diverse and self-funded research environment.
  • A student-focused approach to education and mentorship.
  • Effective coaching and mentoring skills.
  • Strong planning and organising skills.
  • Proficiency in computer literacy and e-learning technologies.
  • Technical professional knowledge and skills in the discipline, and in core strategic areas such as learning and teaching, research and scholarship, community engagement, and professional leadership.
