Assistant Director: Technical Security Services (Post Level 7)

Are you an experienced technical security professional looking for a leadership role? The University of the Free State (UFS) is seeking a dedicated Assistant Director to manage and enhance their technical security services on the Bloemfontein Campus.

This is a permanent, full-time position where you will play a crucial role in developing, implementing, and overseeing all technical security infrastructure and projects across the institution.

Your Responsibilities Will Include:

  • Developing and implementing service standards for technical security.
  • Monitoring contractor performance and ensuring compliance with service level agreements.
  • Overseeing contract renewals and conducting cost-benefit analyses for long-term security infrastructure.
  • Aligning technical security planning with institutional funding and strategic goals.
  • Developing project briefs, technical scopes, and business cases for security services.
  • Managing the full lifecycle of Technical Security projects (initiation to closure).
  • Designing and installing security systems like video surveillance, motion detection, facial recognition, and CCTV cameras.
  • Integrating security systems, technologies, and activating Artificial Intelligence capabilities.
  • Managing server infrastructure, networks, data archiving, and system health.
  • Developing and enforcing access control policies.
  • Conducting routine audits and maintaining servers/workstations.
  • Approving card applications and managing access profile requests.
  • Contributing to the budgeting process for technical security services.
  • Managing staff in line with UFS HR policies.
  • Overseeing procurement processes for the Technical Security Services section.

What You Need to Apply (Inherent Requirements):

  • A Bachelor’s degree or an advanced diploma/BTech degree/postgraduate certificate on NQF Level 7, OR a three (3) year National Diploma on NQF Level 6 in Electrical or Electronics Engineering.
  • Valid PSIRA Grade B registration (please attach a copy, or commit to obtaining it within six months of appointment).
  • A valid Code 8 driver’s licence (please attach a copy).
  • A minimum of four (4) years’ relevant working experience directly related to the duties outlined above.

Recommendations (Bonus Points If You Have):

  • Experience within the higher education sector.
  • Certifications in Avigilon or other recognized CCTV camera systems (attach proof).
  • A Project Management certificate (attach proof).
  • Registration with a professional body like the Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA) (attach proof).
  • Impro certification (IXP400 & Impro Portal) (attach proof).
  • Knowledge in conducting physical security assessments.
  • Familiarity with intruder and fire alarm systems.
  • Knowledge of electric fence installations and maintenance.
  • Understanding of Access Control systems.
