Artisan: Airconditioning & Electrical (P10) (Facilities Management: Maintenance Services)

The University of Johannesburg (UJ) is looking for a skilled Artisan in Airconditioning & Electrical to join our Facilities Management team at the Soweto Campus. This is a permanent, full-time position where you will be crucial in maintaining our campus infrastructure, specifically focusing on HVAC (heating, ventilation, and air conditioning) and electrical systems.

What You’ll Do (Key Responsibilities)

As an Artisan, your main tasks will include:

  • Ensuring all work complies with the Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) Act and relevant legislation.
  • Performing repairs, maintenance, and installation of HVAC systems.
  • Troubleshooting and replacing faulty components like motors, switches, pumps, wiring, thermostats, and fans.
  • Developing and following maintenance schedules for HVAC systems.
  • Responding to emergency repairs, which may be outside normal working hours.
  • Calculating correct BTU requirements for HVAC systems, considering room size, openings, and other equipment.
  • Installing HVAC ductwork, including flexible tubing and sheet metal.
  • Ensuring HVAC solutions are energy-efficient and meet client needs.
  • Assisting the Facilities and Technical Team with various tasks and managing workload.
  • Transporting equipment and goods as required.
  • Preparing input for monthly maintenance reports and general administration.
  • Helping to ensure infrastructure is always available for use.
  • Measuring and re-gassing air conditioners when necessary.
  • Managing personnel, ensuring quality, and timely task execution.
  • Assisting with compiling asset registers for infrastructure, electrical, and mechanical installations.
  • Performing stand-by duties when needed.
  • Advising on the latest technology and legislation for effective resource use.
  • Carrying out preventative maintenance on tools, plant rooms, and equipment.
  • Operating tools and equipment safely according to UJ’s OHS regulations.
  • Maintaining all equipment and tools in good condition.
  • Following established safety procedures for duties like lifting and climbing.
  • Correcting unsafe conditions and reporting those requiring supervisor intervention.
  • Providing support during staff shortages or assisting with light construction projects.
  • Performing duties outside your usual area of expertise to support departmental goals.

What You’ll Need (Minimum Requirements)

  • An essential Trade Test in both Air-Conditioning and Electrical.
  • A Grade 12 (NQF 4) qualification is essential.
  • At least three (3) years of technical experience in a commercial or industrial setting.
  • A strong understanding of advanced principles in air conditioning, refrigeration, and heating.
  • Proven experience in balancing air and water treatment systems according to HVAC protocols, including relevant calculations.
  • Knowledge of the OHS Act and ISO 9001 (Quality standards).
