CREATING A NEW WAVE FOR POSTDOCTORAL FELLOWS IN THE FACULTY OF APPLIED SCIENCES

The Executive Dean of Applied Sciences at the Durban University of Technology (DUT), Professor Suren Singh, recently hosted a groundbreaking postdoctoral workshop at the Coastlands Hotel in Musgrave. This inaugural event marked a significant milestone in the university’s efforts to foster a supportive ecosystem for 25 postdoctoral fellows currently in residence.

The workshop drew an impressive attendance of researchers from various African countries, as well as India. This diverse gathering of scholars reflected the university’s commitment to driving research output towards societal impact through international collaboration and knowledge sharing.

Prof Singh’s initiative aims to create a new wave of opportunities for postdoctoral fellows within the faculty. By providing a platform for networking, skill-building, and research collaboration, the workshop seeks to empower postdoctoral researchers to take their careers to the next level.

The event, conceptualised as “hashtag one” (#1) or the first of more to come, allowed for reflection on key findings of a postdoctoral survey designed and rolled out by Mr Anil Salick CEO of Synergistic Outcomes, that had a 96% response rate. The key findings in terms of 6 critical areas for postdocs were shared with the group-with open engagement, problem-solving breakaway groups, and interactive feedback. The faculty remains committed to the shared solutions generated and its implementation.

Participants had the opportunity to share their research experiences, receive feedback from peers, and network with-established experts in their fields.

As the higher education landscape continues to evolve, the importance of supporting postdoctoral researchers cannot be overstated. By investing in the growth and development of these talented individuals, universities can drive innovation, foster interdisciplinary collaboration, and ultimately, contribute to the betterment of society.

The success of this inaugural workshop is a testament to Prof Singh’s vision and the university’s dedication to creating a vibrant research community. As the faculty continues to build on this momentum, a new wave of opportunities is emerging for postdoctoral fellows at the DUT.
