Bursary Description
It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Coach Johann Swart, a cherished member of the UWC community since 2004.
Specialising in athletics, particularly in throws (shot put, discus, hammer) and jumps (long and high), Coach Swart also made significant contributions to the Heptathlon and left a lasting impact on the South African student sports scene.
In 2019, his athletes — Geraldine Timoteus, Gabrielle Lazarus, and Britney Uys —each earned medals at the South African Senior Championships, showcasing the excellence he nurtured.
During this time, Johann faced his first round of chemotherapy with remarkable courage and dedication; a testament to his resilience.
Uys remembers: “Coach Johann was not only a factor in my university high jump career, but a good mentor who showed great passion and dedication to his athletes. He believed in us and always made sure we had the mental as well as physical strength to perform at the level that we needed to be at. He always had time for fun and serious training. His motto, ‘no days off’, is something that I will always remember.”
Coach Johann was renowned for his unwavering commitment to his athletes, including notable figures like Springbok women’s team captain Bulelwa Latsha. Known affectionately as Coach Blackie, he embodied dedication, hard work, and punctuality.
His passion for high jump led him to mentor future coaches, such as Brandon Matuka, ensuring the continuation of his legacy. Even in his final weeks, Coach Johann continued to coach remotely and in person, demonstrating his boundless commitment.
Johann Swart, born Jurie Johannes Swart in 1952, will be remembered for his significant contributions to athletics and the profound impact he made on countless lives. May his soul rest in peace.
