Bursary Description

The Sugar Industry Trust Fund for Education (SITFE) invites South African students to apply for Bursary Programme 2025 academic year.

The Sugar Industry Trust Fund for Education (SITFE) is offering bursary opportunities for 2025 to support two specific groups of students. If you or someone you know meets the eligibility criteria, this could be a fantastic chance to advance educational goals in the fields of Science, Engineering, or Agriculture.


Who Can Apply?

  1. Children of Sugarcane Farm Workers
    • Open to students who are children of sugarcane farm workers.
    • Eligible to study any field at a University, University of Technology, or College of Agriculture.
  2. Students from Sugarcane Growing Areas (“Missing Middle”)
    • The “Missing Middle” refers to students from families with a combined annual income between R350,000 to R600,000.
    • Eligible students must reside in sugarcane growing areas and wish to pursue studies within the Faculties of Science, Engineering, or Agriculture.

More About the SITFE Bursary – Selection Process

  • Shortlisting: Candidates will be shortlisted based on their Grade 11 final results and Matric June results (if currently in Matric or not studying) or the latest tertiary results (if currently enrolled in higher education).
  • Interviews: Shortlisted candidates will be invited for interviews in mid-December 2024.
  • Final Selection: Based on Matric final results.
  • Successful candidates will be informed by 31 January 2025. If you don’t hear from SITFE by this date, consider your application unsuccessful.

Important: The bursary may be canceled if candidates secure full funding from other bursary schemes or student loans.


Eligibility Criteria

Applicants must meet the following requirements:

  • Nationality: Must be a South African citizen.
  • Academic: Must be in Matric or have completed Matric.
  • Study Requirements:
    • For “Missing Middle” students: Must have registered or applied to study within the Faculties of Science, Engineering, or Agriculture at a recognized institution.
    • For children of sugarcane farm workers: Must have registered for any field of study at a University, University of Technology, or College of Agriculture. No income requirement applies.
