Bursary Description

The South African Road Federation (SARF) is inviting students to apply for its Study Bursary Programme for the 2026 academic year. This bursary supports students pursuing studies related to the road transport sector, both at undergraduate and postgraduate levels.

Bursary Application Closing Date: 31 August 2025
Funding Type: Partial bursary – value determined by need and SARF Council decision
Location: South Africa (open to SADC region residents as well)

  • Road Engineering, including:
    • Civil Engineering
    • Traffic Engineering
    • Bridge Engineering
    • Pavement Engineering
    • Transportation Planning
    • Construction Management
    • Construction Materials
    • Storm Water Management
    • Environmental Aspects

What the Bursary Covers

This is a partial bursary to assist with study-related expenses. Recipients will be required to:

  • Present on their study topic at a SARF local branch
  • Submit bi-annual progress reports
  • Register as associate members of the SARF

Eligibility Criteria

To qualify for the SARF bursary, you must:

  • Be a resident of South Africa or an SADC country
  • Be studying in one of the specified fields
  • Be registered at a recognised South African tertiary institution
  • Have your application endorsed by the academic authority at your institution
  • Have passed:
    • S1 exams for National Diploma students
    • First-year exams for Degree students
  • Preferably be studying full-time (part-time and distance learning also considered)
  • Intend to work in South Africa’s road transport industry after graduation
  • SARF member employees will be given preference
  • Preference also given to advanced-level students (MTech, MSc, or higher)

  • Certified copy of your ID document
  • Certified copy of your Grade 11 results
  • Certified copy of your Matric certificate
  • Your latest tertiary academic results (on institution letterhead)
