Bursary Description

The Leverhulme Trade Charities Trust, which provides financial aid for the families of those working in the “convenience, grocery, and pharmacy trades”, has announced that postgraduate bursary applications are now open for 2025/2026.

The charity’s bursary scheme is open to students on postgraduate courses. If your parent or spouse is a pharmacist (or a grocer or commercial traveller), or you are employed yourself in this capacity, you could qualify for a bursary of up to £5,000 a year towards the cost of a postgraduate degree.

The current round for applications runs from 1 June until 1 September.

As the cost of attending university mounts year on year, the Trust says the bursary has been designed to help families who may be concerned about supporting a child, partner or even themselves through further higher education.

In 2025, the total number of bursaries awarded since the scheme launched is expected to exceed 5,000, totalling £28 million worth of financial aid.

The Leverhulme Trade Charities Trust was established with a bequest from the will of Lord Leverhulme, who made his fortune with Lever Brothers through the manufacture and marketing of soap and cleaning products.

When he died in 1925 Lord Leverhulme left a proportion of his holdings in Lever Brothers to provide grants for the benefits of pharmacists, grocers and commercial travellers and for their families. The Trust’s instructions were flexible and have allowed it to evolve over the years to remain fit for the times.

Today, the Trust aims to support education and make opportunities possible by alleviating financial barriers, this includes bursaries for school, college and university students who are in financial need and who have a connection with grocers and pharmacists.
