Bursary Description


Deadline: 28 August 2025 (for studies starting between Jan–June 2026)

The Oppenheimer Memorial Trust (OMT) is inviting qualified South African students, researchers, and academics to apply for funding opportunities for the 2026 academic year.

Available Scholarship Categories

  1. Master’s and PhD Studies
    For postgraduate students pursuing Master’s or Doctoral degrees locally or abroad.

  2. Postdoctoral Research
    Supports researchers enrolled in postdoctoral programmes at local or international institutions.

  3. Sabbatical Support
    For full-time academics at South African public universities who plan to undertake sabbatical research.

Funding Details

  • Amount: Varies per individual. Not a full-cost scholarship. Applicants are encouraged to seek additional funding.

  • Duration: Covers one academic year. Renewal is performance-based.

Who Can Apply

Master’s/PhD Applicants:

  • Must be South African citizens or permanent residents

  • Registered or planning to register for postgraduate studies in 2025/2026

  • Accepted by a recognised local or international institution

  • Strong academic performance required

  • If applying for overseas study, clear justification must be provided

Postdoctoral Applicants:

  • Open to South Africans, permanent residents, and international candidates

  • Must show academic excellence and commitment to research in South Africa

Sabbatical Applicants:

Required Documents

  • Certified ID or passport

  • Professional photograph

  • CV (3–4 pages max)

  • Academic records and degree certificates

  • Proof of acceptance/registration

  • Project or study outline

  • Budget estimate (tuition, travel, living expenses, etc.)

  • Motivational letter (max 500 words)

  • Income proof

  • Three reference letters (submitted directly by referees)
