Bursary Description


The Joint Japan/World Bank Graduate Scholarship Program (JJ/WBGSP) offers an incredible opportunity for students from World Bank member developing countries to pursue a fully funded Master’s degree in development-related fields at top universities in Japan and other partner countries. This scholarship is part of the World Bank’s commitment to investing in the next generation of global development leaders.

Who Can Apply?

The program is open to highly motivated individuals who:

  • Are nationals of World Bank member developing countries

  • Hold a bachelor’s degree (earned at least 3 years prior to application)

  • Have at least 3 years of recent work experience in a development-related field

  • Are not employed by the World Bank Group or an immediate relative of a World Bank staff member

  • Are admitted to one of the JJ/WBGSP’s participating master’s programs in Japan

This scholarship supports professionals committed to returning to their home countries to contribute to development efforts.


Eligible Fields of Study

Applicants must be accepted into development-focused master’s degree programs in areas such as:

  • Public policy and administration

  • Economic development

  • Infrastructure and environmental management

  • Health and education policy

  • Agriculture and rural development

  • Social sciences and international affairs

Application Process

  1. Apply to a participating master’s program in Japan.

  2. Once admitted, apply for the JJ/WBGSP scholarship via the World Bank’s online portal.

  3. Submit all required documents, which typically include:

    • Academic transcripts and degree certificates

    • Proof of admission

    • Letters of recommendation

    • Statement of purpose and development-focused goals

    • Employment verification
