Bursary Description

In a powerful move to support the next generation of cultural scholars and practitioners, the South African Cultural Observatory (SACO) has opened applications for its 2025–2027 Scholarship Programme. This initiative offers vital financial support to South African nationals pursuing postgraduate studies within the country.

The South African Cultural Observatory is a national research institution dedicated to the economic mapping, monitoring, evaluation, and analysis of South Africa’s cultural and creative industries. Established by the Department of Sport, Arts and Culture, SACO provides evidence-based insights to help government, academia, and the creative sector make informed decisions that grow and protect South Africa’s rich cultural heritage.

Over the years, SACO has positioned itself as a crucial platform in strengthening the creative economy — from hosting research conferences to publishing critical reports on the state of the cultural industries. One of its flagship initiatives is its Scholarship Programme, aimed at empowering young South African researchers and cultural practitioners through postgraduate funding support.

The SACO Scholarship is a partial funding opportunity, contributing up to R40,000 toward tuition and academic expenses for postgraduate students enrolled at South African universities. While it doesn’t cover full tuition or all costs, the financial boost is intended to alleviate some of the financial pressures of higher education and enable scholars to focus on their research and academic ambitions.

Key Details:
Application Deadline: 31 August 2025 at 12h00
Eligibility: South African nationals pursuing postgraduate studies in any discipline, preferably with relevance to the cultural and creative industries.
Value: Up to R40,000 toward tuition and study-related costs.
