Bursary Description

The University of the Western Cape (UWC) has embraced a modern solution with user-friendly dashboards, providing immediate data driven insights to inform decision-making. Faced with outdated manual methods for compiling the Higher Education Management Information System (HEMIS) reports, the University has come up with an interface it can boast about.
In the past the process of compiling reports for HEMIS required manual effort and intervention, using scripts that had been developed by UWC’s Quality Assurance Office over a number of years. But this method became outdated and the technology it was using is no longer supported.
UWC’s Information and Communication Services (ICS) was asked to assist with a solution and explored and evaluated multiple options. The result is a hybrid approach that leverages a cloud-based strategy.
The revised system, implemented by ICS’s Business Systems team, utilises a solution based on Power Business Intelligence (BI) reporting with automation and database integration.
Building on the Power BI platform that was created for HEMIS reporting, ICS also delivered a comprehensive set of reports to Student Administration that enables the institution to monitor near real-time data on applications, selections, offers, registrations, promotions, graduations and other metrics.
ICS is also helping faculties and departments get easier access to student data for their own planning and reporting, which is accessed via a platform developed and built in-house.
