Scholarship Description:

The University of Tokyo MEXT Scholarship is a fully-funded scholarship offered by the Japanese government to international students who want to study at the University of Tokyo. The scholarship covers tuition fees, airfare, living expenses, and a monthly stipend. Applicants must be under 35 years old and have a bachelor’s degree from a recognized university. They must also be proficient in Japanese.

Fully Funded University of Tokyo MEXT Scholarship 2024-25, Japan. is available to undertake Masters, PhD level programs at University of Tokyo.

Scholarship Benefits:

(1) Allowance: The monthly stipends for AY2024 are pending confirmation, but for AY2023, they were 144,000 yen/month (Master’s) and 145,000 yen/month (Doctoral). An additional 2,000 or 3,000 yen/month may be added for study in specific regions. The scholarship won’t be provided during extended absences from the university.

(2) Travel: Recipients receive an economy class air ticket to Japan from their residence’s closest international airport, with return airfare if leaving within the final month of the scholarship period. Costs beyond airfare are the recipient’s responsibility.

(3) School Fees: Enrollment and tuition fees are waived.

(4) Scholarship Suspension: Scholarship may be canceled if recipient provides false information, breaches pledges, breaks the law, faces university disciplinary action, has poor academic performance, changes visa status, receives other scholarships, advances without permission, transfers, or leaves the host university.

Eligible Nationalities:

Applicant who holds one of the nationalities specified by MEXT can apply for this scholarship.

This year’s nationality provisions have yet to be announced (the announcement is expected to reach us after the application period has closed), however, in the last round, only those who hold a nationality found on MEXT’s list of Priority Nationalities below were eligible for nomination.

Also, applicants must have the nationality of a country with diplomatic relations with the Japanese government. Applicants who have Japanese nationality at the time of application are ineligible. However, Japanese nationals that reside outside of Japan at the time of application, holding dual nationality with another country, and plan to renounce their Japanese nationality before arrival (equivalent to the time when they enroll as a student at a Japanese university), may apply.

Eligibility Criteria:

International students with outstanding academic records (*1) who wish to enter Japan in October, 2024 as a new student (*2) to study in the Master’s or Doctoral Program at the Graduate School of Science.

  • Applicants who have already graduated from their latest degree program should have a final grade point of 2.30 or higher, while current students should have a grade point of 2.30 or higher for their current courses, and both should be expected to maintain the same academic standards during the course of the scholarship program.
    Grade points shall be calculated according to a formula specified by MEXT.
