Bursary Description

Yifan Chen, a second year BA Fashion Design student at University of Westminster, has completed an internship with fashion brand Standing Ground, supported by UKFT x MADE IT Bursary programme.

Each year, UKFT offers 10 MADE IT bursaries, kindly supported by the Worshipful Company of Clothworkers and CapitB charity, to talented students in fashion and textiles-related courses.

Yifan completed an eight-week internship at Standing Ground, a contemporary eveningwear fashion brand. During this time, she gained valuable insights into the fashion industry and professional studio environment, significantly boosting her confidence as an aspiring designer.

‘‘During my internship, I was responsible for organising the studio’s work areas after fashion shows and assisting the pattern cutter and seamstress with various tasks. I also supported the designers in developing fabric samples by referencing unique details from previous designs and contributed to garment photography and fittings.’’

She went on:

‘‘I’ll always remember the satisfaction of applying the skills I gained to create complex samples with new techniques, gradually realising that my perception of self was shifting. As I was founding my place within the team, this deepened my sense of belonging and I was slowly beginning  to shape my identity as a designer. This journey has been steady and uplifting, a growth shared by all the interns at Standing Ground.’’

‘‘I also contributed to fabric/trim research and the creation of rating sheets for new SS25 collection. Each new task brought its own set of challenges, and through every challenge I was expanding my knowledge and growing as a person.’’

‘‘The internship experience has given me the opportunity to realise my potential. Beyond the technical skills I have picked up along the way, it has taught me the value of true craftsmanship: perseverance, attention to detail, and insight. These will be indispensable soft skills for my future career. Everyone in the team is willing to go the extra mile to perfect each garment, and this has deepened my appreciation for the care that goes into every stitch and seam.’’

‘‘I look forward to the next steps in my career and will always carry the quiet confidence that my time at Standing Ground instilled in me; like stitches in a garment: unseen yet lasting.’’

‘‘Thank you to UKFT for supporting and enriching my experience—this invaluable opportunity has shaped my skills and strengthened my commitment to craftsmanship in fashion.’’
